I've not had much luck with these AB cables so I decided to go back to the original cables and make up a bracket to clamp the sleeves in place.
Some of the other solutions involved bending sheet metal but unfortunately I don't have the equipment here to do a neat job.
All I did was weld a bolt onto the back of the gearshift bracket and make a flat plate with 2 slots and a hole for the new bolt.

Now I have all my gears and selecting is nice and smooth.
I also cut out 40mm from the gear stick length to give me a cheap short shift option. It looks like you'd need to turn down the end of the gear stick in a lathe before tapping it so cutting a section out was a lot easier.

Should cut a few seconds of your drive to the Lecht summit with that short shift option Archie :burnout: :burnout:

Archie,
Nice solution, and one that appeals to Aberdonian values. IE nice and cheap too. Glad you got it fixed in the end.

You say in earlier posts that the AB cables Stef sold you were stiff and you couldn't get them to work. The AB cables also require their own mounting bracket. Did Stef supply that to you when she sold you the cables? If not, ask her to post it up. The cables aren't much use without it.

I have to admit, when i passed cables to you, I ASSUMED you had the right bracket (it is slightly offset, compared to the SE one in your pic) and didn't include the one I have here - I can send it up if you need it....,

...that said, I like your 'temporary' solution, which may well become permanent as it seems to do the job - i'm even considering fitting a similar system to mine to prevent any future problems with the SE cables which are currently working fine......
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Yeah, I got the bracket from Stef too. My original Lotus cables are only a few years old and their movement seemed much smoother than the AB cables.
I'm happy with the gears now, just got 2 rear wheel bearing to replace and a hispec rear caliper leak to fix  and the car will be perfect. :burnout:

I'm hoping it stays dry tomorrow, meeting an Evora and an Elise in Tomintoul then it's a blast over the Lecht to Balmoral for photos beside the castle. This was the road that was closed with snow last week so anything might happen!

If you had the same weather as I did up here today, then I bet you have some stunning photo's and did it all with the roof off :burnout:
