"B" Post Caps - How many need replacements?

Just to keep everyone in the loop, the mold is being made and we added a third hinge mounting point in case we feel the two original posts are not going to survive. They also connected the three mounting points to each other and the front edge of the cap (like a beam) to give them more strength.

Here is a picture:



It is easy enough to use the middle post as an additional support for the hinge without adding a screw but if the other posts flex, then, we will add a third screw which should help.

We should see samples in around a month. The manufacturer has brand new originals to get the color and texture from, so we hope they will be a good solution out of the box.

Just another bit of info. This is still very close to completion but the manufacturer in China had some trouble getting the texture right, so we gave them a little time to get it right. We really expect the first samples any day now.

More news and pictures when we receive them.

Sorry that this is taking so long but it finally looks like the samples are almost complete.
They still need to make a jig to drill the spring holes in the early caps and secure the 2 parts together.

They seem to be very busy at the moment and seeing as our parts are a very low order quantity we are getting pushed down the list.

As John mentioned earlier they were having problems matching the texture. Unfortunately this was as close as they could get.

We should have a couple of sets delivered to both John and myself in the next couple of weeks so as we can do a trial fit on our post covers.

Providing they are ok. Final production will begin next month.

Looking at the amount of work that has gone into the mould I can see why it takes so long.

Again, a long time since I looked in but it's looking good.

One question however: I took my caps off to heat and reform the top of the B post covers to try and stop them rubbing on the hood frame and the top of the offside is cracked and the nearside one is crumbling badly. I am going to make up a template to see if I can stick a reinforcing plate underneath and may put a tapped plate underneath and ditch the rusty spring clips. Has anyone else found similar problems?

Don't know if it will help your problem Geoff. I did a temp fibreglass repair on one of my B post caps just after this project started. The fibreglass sticks to the caps very well.... But last week the rivets pulled through the fibreglass

It would probably work well to glue the covers back together.

I was planning to make some plates out of FR4 and stick them underneath - I've finally got around to fixing the roof grab handle and epoxy and aluminium putty (best before 1980 something!) both adhered extremely well after roughing up the plastic.

Maybe we can look at developing an inside frame that provides support for the plastic exterior and will support the hinge and new spring clips. A basic horseshoe that conforms to the correct shape and has a flap to support the hinge?
