I picked up the samples a few days ago. I am happy with the overall shape & fit of the caps although as we used a new cap for the 3D scan a slight trim may be required for the hinge & fwd corner.

top-view-new.jpg

DSC07568.JPG

bottom-view-new.jpg

Ok. Trying to be as critical as possible here:

Texture although not a perfect match. I think is close enough for it not to look out of place I knew they couldn't match the exact texture.

Sidewall is about 0.4mm thicker than the original But I guess that this will make the parts stronger. The Hinge attachment is definatly going to be alot more robust than the original.

My main concerns are that for some reason the early style cap arrived in 2 halves but other than this they look very good. I am assuming that they did this so as we could clearly inspect both pieces.

The later cap seems to have a splatter caused by the screw inserts. We may have to live with this on the lower surface. But unfortunatly it is also noticable on the upper surface.

1 of the screw inserts is also inserted too deep.

I have emailed the company to ask if they can cure these problems. My main concern is the splatter effect that is visible on the outer surface and the early cap not being assembled.

The insert problem is an easy fix but better to ask if it can be cured before they go into production.

The colour is also a shade or 2 too dark. I will see if they can do a better colour match. As they took the colour from a new part it may not be as far out as I think from comparing it to sunburnt set. Like the escutcheons we may have to accept as close as they can get to the sample.

There is also a slight shrinkage of the material where the posts are. There is probably nothing we can do about this.

John was kind enough to take some good quality photos of the parts which are available Here

I hope to have an answer to my questions in the next few days. If anyone has any other concern or suggestions how to make these better please let me know before they go into production.

Many thanks

Wayne

This was the reply I received today: Answers in red.
I have added some more pictures of the old style cap to the drop box folder listed in the previous post. Hope to have more updates soon.

I have asked for best / strongest way to be used to join the early caps. and if they can fix the splatter & deep insert I would be happy. Colour and shrinkage improvement would be a bonus but I can not guarantee it.... Especially the shrinkage.... To be honest it is barely noticeable. Just thought I would ask :D

Thank you for the samples. Both John and myself have received them and both share the same concerns.

1. The 2 parts of the Old style cap (that was sent from the US) Look good But we were expecting this to arrive as a 1 piece part the same as the original. I assume that you sent us this part in 2 individual pieces so as we could look at it more closely?

I trust that the production parts will be secured together when we receive them?

As we received these parts un-assembled we are unable to check the parts fit and work correctly.
I will be sending the 1 part that you sent me off to a friend in Europe tomorrow for him to compare it to his parts and to see it it will fit the car.

We see that the samples from US was glued together with two seperate parts, so if you like, we could glue them together before shipment.

2. The New style caps seem to have a splatter on the textured surface. This is also visible on the lower surface.

I think this is probably caused by the process used for inserting the brass screw inserts??

The marks on the lower surface are not a problem and I can live with this. But any marks on the upper surface would be un acceptable and would render the part scrap.

Please can you confirm that this will not be on production parts?

Do not worry about splatter, it's not mold problem. because the material was not dried totally, there are some splatter on surface. It's same for other plastic products. For mass production, as only as the material is totally dried, the problem will happen.

3. Looking at the brass screw inserts. 1 of the inserts is too deep and is unusable. This is consistent on all samples. Please could this issue be fixed?
I will check here and get back to you, do you mean the left insert in attached pic is too deep, right?

4. I noticed marks on the outer surface where the lugs were installed?? I assume this is the shrinkage that you mentioned earlier? I assume that there is nothing that you can do to rectify this?

Sorry i donnot understand the problem well, could you take some pics to show me the problem?

5.The colour of all parts seem very dark compared to the samples we sent and looking at the parts installed on myy car they look very dark....

Color problem could be resolved, donnot worry.

It seems that the earlier issues have been resolved.

Winelot has received the 1 side cap that I sent and was kind enough to take some pictures of the fit.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/dlikg2dnrw4up ... ize%20.JPG

https://www.dropbox.com/s/pttb3mezlk2bw ... ize%20.JPG

I believe the only concerns were the colour and the front edge of the back part was not parallel with the front of the cap.
Not really sure how this happened? Fortunately it does not seem to be a problem.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/56gk62znplp0l ... ent%20.JPG

I think I may have found out why I just received 1 old style cap

It seems that the other 1 has been doing some weight training.
The company have glued it together and It has been tested with 2.3 kg for several days and then 4.6kg for a few more days.
Hopefully the springs will not be applying anywhere near this pressure.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/fl7efkx8nzsjt ... -07_85.jpg

Having a look at the New style cap this afternoon. It seems that the fouling on the outer corner is minimal I had to remove less than 1mm.

The company believe that they have found a match for the colour. It is difficult to work out from the photo but it looks way closer than the black
samples. My sunburnt B post covers have a definite blue tint to them.
