Well, at least i had something to smile about, then!

Humour is a good remedy for feeling a tad pi$$ed off :D ......

...I think things are worse than it first looked (apart from it being dark at the time  ) - I went out to empty the boot for it going away tomorrow (and to see if the roll bars might 'fall off' before the value assessor gets to it) - couldn't open the boot, and when i did lift it, the rear panel was still attached to the lock!!!

The boot contents have suffered (washer bottle smashed) and the sides of the boot (O/S wheel-well) is a bit crackly. The N/S door has an odd gap at the back and the roof is a bit skewed.

Maybe I'm being pessimistic, as there are worse ones out there (at least, I mean they WERE worse before being repaired).....

....I'm sort of leaning towards getting it back for a track car, as cosmetics wont matter, and I can do the back end up with fibreglass and silicone sealant  - the decision on that hinges on anything being wrong with the metalwork - can't be ar$ed with doing a chassis swap.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

That's a helluva lot of rear damage for rolling down a hill   The other car looks unscathed.

Makes you wonder what if someone slammed into your rear at 30 mph

Great idea Dave (dibs on the roof storage tray and carpet)

Seriously though, I hope its not as bad as you think and you get it back on the road (still calling dibs though if you don't :-D )

Dave

Sorry to hear of your miss-hap, car looks very sad, but at least no-one was injured.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I have a couple of spare bricks left over from the cottage renovation if you want them to put behind the wheels........... :D

Hope you are able to get it fixed though. Keep us up to date.

At the rate of the current offers for bits, I'll be able to both repair the car AND have enough bricks to build another garage to put it in

Thinking on Mr P, if we can discuss when i return from hols, I may be interested in a deal for the elise light conversion= two good rear lights. It may be an option?

Nice thought, Nick - but i can just fit them to the blue one and use those lights if it comes to that :D ....

....of course, I'll have to find someone for the insurers to buy the parts from (I'm unsure if they'd expect me to provide them FOC or if they'll pay the going rate).

At the moment it's gone to the assessor to check it all over and establish the availability of parts......

...DVB will no doubt be getting a call from them soon.

I can amass most of the parts from offers via this forum, but why should I diminish 'our' parts supply if the insurers will pay elsewhere.

Hi Dave,

Sorry to read about the smash. It makes the vandal(s) who snapped off my driver side wiper arm on Friday night appear quite nice guys really

I hope you either:

1. get it sorted or
2. get the right insurance offer

Regards

Has there been any news?

Is there a chance of redemption?

Or has the insurance company made a realistic (descision making) offer?

Hope the news is good Mr Pink.

Cheers

Well, there is news - but not good news :(

They have upped their offer from £2750 to a mind-boggling £3250, and say it is their final offer (we got a letter yesterday!)

I have previously sent them a detailed breakdown of the car, and work done, costs spent etc, totalling a hell of a lot more. Whilst I accept that I can't expect all my money back, I don't think the insured amount (at renewal in May) of £5k is unreasonable - but they seem to think that it's an old car with 144K on the clock and are disregarding all of the upgrades (even though they were declared when they took the premium!), and the fact that the engine/gearbox/all suspension and 'moving parts' have done a fraction of that, the interior was totally replaced, along with the roof and all seals - etc etc etc.

They now say that I will receive the money this week, and have 21 days to dispute the claim and get my own independant engineer to examine the car - which is fine, except they won't tell me where it is!!!!

They have also sent me some photos which show damage to the rear (as expected) but also damage to FNS of bumper, and FOS wheelarch - neither of which were like it when the car left here - I have photos of the car just before it was collected.

The pictures also show the car out in the rain, uncovered, with the windows part open

Suffice to say, they will be getting a phone call in the morning expressing my total unhappiness of the situation.

In the meantime, how 'independant' do they expect my engineer to be (seeing as the one they used is 'theirs' not independant) - I can find plenty of people I know to give a valuation, but does anyone know what they'll accept???

Is it worth sending some photos (and details of all work done) off to Club Lotus asking for a valuation? It would cost me a few quid, but would they accept that? - they do if you want an 'agreed value', but would they now?

Perhaps I'll give Alan a ring and ask his oppinion, he may well be able to assist with an 'independant' valuation - but it will also depend on whereabouts in the country they've taken the car.

All in all, I'm NOT HAPPY with KGM insurance, and wouldn't ever recomend them, or use them again - it was insured via Peter James, who use a variety of insurers, but I cant see me going there again, unless they find another (reputable) company to actually underwrite it.

Is that the Peter James that

"... believe in offering a truly personal service.
When you call us, you will speak to experts who are as passionate as you.
We are the enthusiast's insurance broker
and we're always here to help."

What are they doing about it?

I wouldn't waste any time - The insurers will have already moved your car on - if you ever want to see it again you need to act fast

Sorry to hear of your predicament Dave. I 've just done my ins via Peter James after 15+ years with Footman James. Just checked policy and oooops yes with KGM too.

Following your experience I may well do an agreed value for both Elans, not just the old one.

Hope you are able to sort it out to you satisfaction.

I've sent an email to Alan at Club Lotus detailing my tale of woe - basically to see if he can suggest a way to approach the impasse we're at - they want to give me £3250, I want more!...

...at the moment they are holding most of the cards (ie, they have my car and wont tell me where it is)....

....I'm not trying to make a big thing out of it, as I'm fairly sure that most companies do the same thing - but i really do feel that if they are happy to base my anual premium on a value of £5k, then their 'value' should be far nearer to that number than the cheapest car they can find on Autotrader!

Better not be - I have expressly stated to the insurance that I haven't given up any rights to the car (it still has a load of my stuff in it!).
