little tubes of sealant

ok.....I usually use sikaflex 221 but its costing me a fortune....
of all the 310ml tubes I have bought I have used about 20ml and thrown the rest away after its gorn orf
anyone know of anything similar to 221 in black....but that comes in smaller quantities....say 25ml....or 80ml

I am in the same boat as you ,I have thrown numerous half full tubes of sealant away because it's no longer useable,What a good idea for some one to produce a smaller tube that just does the one job.
I am sure you will find some if you keep looking

I've been using Tigerseal instead of Sikaflex as it's a couple of pounds a tube cheaper but seems just as good - and as you say, most of it ends up in the bin anyway

Can't remember how much it was off hand but it wasn't a lot.

Silicone sealant isn't an issue - it's freely availlable in small tubes (toothpaste size) but it's cheaper to get in big cartridges at Screwfix (or even cheaper at Poundland!!!!)...

The issue is the PU 'glue' type sealants which go off as soon as they are exposed to moisture in the air - i.e. once the tube is first opened.

Nice idea, Geoff - but not sure how practical a GB would be - working on the principle that it has a shelf-life of 12 months, it isn't worthwhile keeping it in one place until we all meet up to distribute it - and to save just a quid on the postage it isn't really practical to post onwards......

....and at that price it's cheap enough to order individually as and when needed...

That said, i'll still have a tube with you - it'll save me 50p!

I've just redone the sikaflex on my roof. Last did over 2 years ago (September 2011) and had the old tube in the cupboard. The nozzle was solid, but I used a sharp knife to cut into the middle of the tube and it was ok. Don't know how far it cures in the tube, but you could slit like I did or even drill a tiny hole starting at the top and working down until you find sticky goo! I'm sure you'll get at least 3 goes out of a tube.

Is Tigerseal equivalent to Silkaflex 221? I have an open tube on the go.

To extend the life once open. Tightly wrap the end of the nozzle in insulating tape - every couple of months unblock the plug in the nozzle and squirt some fresh stuff through then re-tape. Keeps for the best part of a year.

I couldn't say it is IDENTICAL - but it is a polyurethane 1-part adhesive that sticks like mud to a blanket!

Hi all,
I have had this stuff for a while but only just tried it. http://www.ct1ltd.com/en and before I bought it I had a demonstration of its use. It bonds pretty much anything and works like Sikaflex but can be used under water.
The demo consisted of a beaker full of water being cut down the side with a Stanley knife, about 20cm, the water was pouring out but the guy just squeazed the sealant down the split and the water stopped completely.
I have just repaired one of my seals and it works really well, but you can,t just wet a finger to smooth it out, you have to use their solvent, but that does make the finish so much better than a wet finger. In cold conditions it may require some heat to send it off.
The best part is having opened the tube several times now and I was told this would happen it seals itself, by that I mean the first few 4mm of the sealant at the top of tube goes hard but you just poke this out and the rest of the sealant is fine to use.

ct1 is good stuff, I use it in the roofing game. I sealed around the mother in law's bath after I fitted a new suite, it goes off pretty firm but stays flexible, not thought about using it to rebuild the seals though. Travis perkins used to sale it for around £7.50 + vat I think.

give it a try. My door seal just above the door catch, where when the door shuts it slides under the roof seal was knackered in fact it ripped off.
So I cut some foam and first stuck this down using the sealant, then I covered the foam with the sealant and shaped it using the solvent, to the required shape. it now fits better than when new and the repair is invisible.

Most of my seals are ok, the top of the A posts are my biggest problem with, the main problem being, I don't know how they should look I'll probably end up buying new ones whilst they're still available!

Sorry about the delay but here are the pics.

The area you see was badly ripped and part of it was missing. I rebuilt it using foam first then covered the foam with C.T.1.
It gave a firm but flexible finish which was ideal for the place I repaired. When used as a thinner coat elsewhere it should give a less firmer finish. In cold weather you may need to use an air dryer to send it off.

Thanks for that, I must sat the CT1 does seem to blend in well. What foam did you use, seat pad foam or something denser?

I just used a thin layer of sofa seat pad foam, it is just a medium density foam with the strength coming from the ct!.I can take a pic of the A post seals if you want, but I am not sure you will get the full idea from a pic, probably better see the real thing.
