Ian Levy (the first guy to seriously look at the Elan ALDL) reckoned the Elan uses 12V over ALDL on his site. I must confess I've never tested the assertion by actually putting a scope on the port myself...

Trouble is the ECU won't try to transmit anything unless you send a data request (there's no chatter from the Elan ECU) and you can't do that without a working interface...

Ok I bought a few bits to make a start on a wireless prototype. I've also bought bits for USB and RS232 interfaces that I'll try to make into interfaces for Donington.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to sit on your arse with a blank look on your face.

Its mostly just knowing the jargon. There's not that much to ALDL interfaces when you get down to its just an invertion and a change in the voltage level.

I stuck a voltmeter on the ALDL data line and set it to record the maximum. It came up with 4.92V (fortunately I modified my interface box to send 5V some time ago so that didn't mess up the maximum) . There's a slim possibility it samples over a longish period and this is value distorted but I'm inclined to believe the ECU outputs 5V - which is good news. I'll try a RS232 to TTL device to see if it fries or not....

Having spent the last two days making normal USB interfaces, I found I was making the wireless prototype tonight without having really having planned to. Putting circuits into little boxes is habit forming in a mind numbingly dull sort of way.

I'll maybe try it tomorrow...

Is there an update on this, and if the ECU TTL was 5V is there an easy way to make the cable, as I fancy a play with the ElanScan software, and just need a cable...

The update is I got it working for about 3 seconds then fried it.... a £20 i.c. up in smoke :cry:

I ordered another two...
