Gear Knob replacement, Thread size?

Ime toying with the idea of replacing the gear knob, The Elans tucked away for winter so just wondering if the knob is threaded? If so, does anyone know the thread size?

I think you'll find that a lot of aftermarket shift knobs come unthreaded and with a "universal" fit adaptor. They are without threads and have a rubber sleeve (they usually have several in the package of differing sizes) that slides over the threaded shifter shaft then tightens with the use of small allen screws. Every aftermarket shifter I've bought was like this.

Anybody who has ever cut down their gear shaft for 'short shift', how much did you cut off?

I cut off all the threaded part. Probably about 1 inch or so.

As you know from one of my earlier threads mine was cut down by a previous owner to 6 1/2". I was advised that "A stock gear lever is 7 3/8" so mine is about an inch missing!

I've never driven a standard shift so cannot complain but I am quite happy with 6 1/2 inches - size isn't everything!

Back to the topic at hand - does cutting the lever down a bit improve shifting feel or make it more comfortable? I hadn't thought of doing that though I do have the short shift kit installed.

The one that I ended up buying came with different thread inserts which fitted fine

Hacksaw? Recipricating saw? I've got one of those new-fangled oscillating "multi tools" I've been meaning to try out but I don't know if it can cut through metal like this.

Dremel and cutoff wheel for me. A hacksaw would work though.

The multi-tool will burn up a lot of blades trying to cut the shifter. I have a real Multi-Master and it doesn't cut metal well at all. Sheetrock is another story...

A cut-off wheel on a dremel or even on a decent regular drill will work as will a hacksaw (or reciprocating (hack)saw)
