Help - Alternative Sound Deadening/Underlay

I've just removed the seats and carpets for a clean and found the original foam underlay quite wet in the footwells on both sides. The carpets were dry so I don't know how long the foam underlay has held the water as i don't take the car out in the rain. It also looks like it would take a very long time to dry out in situ.

Has anyone sourced an alternative underaly of the same thickness but which doesn't hold any water?

Search eBay for:

sound proofing heat insulation closed cell foam sheets 2mtr x 500mm

Don't forget to check your outriggers and jacking points for rust!

Exactly what I was looking for; just ordered it. Thanks for the info.

I was really pleased to see that the outriggers and jacking points were fine. However i sprayed a precautionary amount of waxoyl everywhere i could access. I've also washed the carpets with the Rug Doctor hired from Tesco (brilliant piece of equipment); I've taken the seats to Leathercare Renovations to be brought back to their former glory and no doubt I'll find something else to do whilst everything is out.

Talk about project creep. All I was intending to do was hoover the carpets but the Mrs was away and I was bored.

I have taken the good advice to remove the old damp sponge underlay with closed cell foam 10mm thick bought from eBay.
Should I glue this into position or just lay loosely ?
While the seats and carpets were out I noticed that the inner metal cills near the footwells have been eaten away just in the corners by rust the size of a golf ball is this a repairable job or do the metal cills need to be replaced ?
A few other small problems I have found are
Engine temp gauge not working
fuel gauge not working
Door speaker has fallen inside of the door
Any advice would be welcome as I do not have any manuals on the car I have searched eBay and they are very very rare.

I didn't bother gluing it, mainly incase I wanted to be able to access the area again, there has been no problem with subsequent movement as the stiffness of the carpet holds it well, use the existing underlay as a template if possible

It is your call, as a minimum you need to clean it up, kill the rust, paint and protect it. There is a good (long) thread on the subject 'What to do about rust on the outriggers' just read the last several pages for ideas

Hi
All the welding has been done only a small bit in each corner of the foot wells.
All the sponge sound proofing has been changed for the sealed foam bought from eBay.
Four new speakers and a CD player have been installed.
I have purchased some sealer for the underneath of the car the stuff they put on oil rigs
Just waiting for a few days off work in the sun to seal the underneath of the car.
T cut and polished all the paintwork.
Cleaned and sealed the hood phew if any meetings are being held not too far from South Wales I might pop over the bridge for a visit
