I`ve manage to get the chassis painted in between the rain and wind ::) Once dry all give a coat of clear waxoyl then just need to clean up Rear calipers. Once i get my new springs from SJ`s then i can put her back together.

Just realize the weakest link in the chain (lower back for me). I worked 5-days straight (after work) a year ago but I was laying flat on my back on a padded creeper; no problem there. Me no wanty ruptured disc again!

However, me likey girlfriend having to ride "cowgirl", so my recovery might be intentionally S-L-O-W ;D
Strive for perfection in everything. (given time)
Take the best that exists & make it better. (given inclination)
If it doesn't exist, create it. (God did)
Ignore what I say. (good advice)

REALLY inspiring pics there Monty, and having had my wheels off now (and being a bit shocked at the state of what was behind them, although I suppose I shouldn't be after 15 years), I feel as though I may have to do the same.

It's a nice how-to-do-it example and shows the results of your efforts very well.

I think I might use some red oxide paint over the steel as an undercoat to the Hammerite, and then maybe not bother with the Waxoyl. Oh that reminds me - will you be painting on the clear Waxoyl or spraying it? And did you use wet&dry or a wire brush in a drill to get rid of any surface rust first?

(Not picking faults, just curious and very interested)

Nitroman: yeehar!

[/quote]

Monty

Now you have cleaned and freed everything, I would recommend you have 4 wheel tracking set up on the car. Specially as the photo show the bolt has worked its way into the mount. The Important thing is of course the position of the cam ( eccentric waser cruedly welded to bolt )

It will also save you tyre money. ( cost here in France approx 35 GBP equivalent )

And imrove handling ::)

Cheers

Neil

I got my rear toe-in sorted at my local tyre place for GBP24.95. Took him ages but it was done spot on with the proper lazer gadgets and the 4 post lift.

We did a cursory check of the camber, too.

Saved me hours scrabbling around on the garage floor.

Jim B

Monty,

I like this thread and the pics, keep it coming ...

...also when I cleaned up the chassis and wishbone mounting points on mine I found the best tool for removing the surface rust and getting back to the metal was a 'drag hook' (- the sort you use to remove paint from woodwork in conjunction with a blowlamp.)

Used some primer/killer plus a coat of hammerite, then waxoyl.

Next winter - the front!

Jim B

Yo yo yo ;D
Got a bit further today. Bottom wishbone, top arm, anti-rollbar and hub and disc back on, just got to set up the dampers and springs then torque things back up (at ride height) ;D
Oh still got to clean up the calipers ::)

that fender box looks like your main stereo unit! has the computer cables going in and out--this is probably the brains of whatever faceplate you have. it's got the antenna lead in too so probably has the radio tuner in it too.

When I took my Elan to be tuned recently, the only negative thing the mechanic had to say about the condition of it was that some of the paint was flaking off the suspension components.
Anyway, after being inspired by what Monty had done with his Pinky (pardon?), I decided to have a bash myself.

So I amassed a bunch of tools and chemicals, and headed under the wheelarches at the weekend.

I started by dismantling everthing, then wire-brushed/stripped any loose paint/rust, painted it all in a nice thick coating of Zinc182, and finished it off with Hammerite. Oh, and of course I copper-slipped all fasteners that had to be undone.

Before:

After:

Now I just need a few days for my skinned knuckles and all the pulled shoulder muscles to heal!
