Door latch stuck- can't close door!

Postby Kathryn » Sat 19.04.2014, 13:42

Hi, I've not had my Elan 24 hours yet and already I have a small (hopefully) problem. The passenger door latch is stuck in the closed position and will not budge, so I can't shut the door. The locks seem to be working fine. I can see someones had a problem with it in the past as there's chips where they've tried to lever it. My dad has tried pushing it with a screwdriver and loosening the screws but to no avail! Looking on here I see people have had trouble with the latch and door button and central locking but these seem to be working fine.
Just wonder if any one has a quick fix, just so I can shut the door- at least then I can use it, any passengers will just have to climb across!
Thanks.

My driver's door has done this occasionally. I was able to reset the mechanism with a key then spray it with lubricant.
I would not recommend WD-40 for this because it will dry off within a few weeks.

Yeah I wouldn't use WD-40 because it will evaporate and is very short-term stuff. I was told on a previous vehicle to use silicone spray, and make sure you get one with a little straw so you can get some deep inside the lock mechanism. I know the locksmith told me that they only use silicone type sprays, not WD-40. It's also good for garage doors so I keep some around.

Th Si spray is also very good for the door hinges, bonnet and boot release mechanisms etc....You should be able to get a can from your local backstreet garage or motor factor.

Try spraying with some white lithium grease.

Graphite dust is another very good alternative for locks.

Yep. Graphite for the lock to save gumming it up.

This product has been a staple in my house as long as I can remember - my dad had a bottle 40 years ago. A very light penetrating lubricant, quick to evaporate, with fine graphite dust in suspension. Penetrates the lock then leaves a slippery bit of graphite inside after drying.

Quick fix you say....

Normally it's not the lock that jams but the mechanism...

Lower the window fully down...

Look in the top of the door, you will see a short bar running to the external door release handle, spray the guide with WD40 (or such like) at the same time actuate the door handle... It'll return to it's normal springy self, should last for a year or two :-)

TTFN
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... The N/A-Team.
