Custom Rear Hubs - Run 2

Postby Jeemy » Wed 29.01.2014, 17:19

The previous set of these went well, but took longer than it should have due to some personal issues which those who know about, know about.

The final set of the original 25 is now going on eBay and as such this won't really take place for a long time. When it does I will be able to get it from the factory to you, much quicker this time around.

So if you want a set of these hubs, please add your name to the list below. Once we hit 10 members the buy becomes possible, at 20, it becomes reasonably priced.

Here is the setup:

The Group Buy is for a PAIR of carbon steel rear hubs to fit the Elan; instead of a combined disc & hub, you have a common type hub which will take any brake disc suitable for a 4x100 setup, and so you can then pick your own brake setup. Thereafter instead of £300+ to replace the whole assembly, you only need to change out the brake discs (approx £20). It also allows you to put uprated brake kits on using bigger discs.

The hub kit works with OEM (using MDC266 discs or Apec), the PNM kits (although you need to be more careful with the disc choice or have 1mm skimmed off the disc face) and its my end goal to have the kit working with the HiSpec kit once more, but a custom part will need redesigned for that. By the time this is finished I hope to have that part already in play.

What you get:

*CARBON STEEL REAR HUBS*

Made out of carbon steel, milled with wheel bolt threads and a disc retaining thread. Inner bearings pressed in and sealed in an aerospace-grade chamber. Outer bearings to insert on fixing. 2 hubs, 2 bearings per side, per side.

Prices correct and inclusive of VAT at time of posting, this may change due to inflation/material costs when a production date is fixed. Prices based on 20 or more orders, its approx 15% more if people want to "go early".

Hubs (pair) £130.48
Bearings (pair, seals & fitting) £36
Shipping & packing £10
Total cost: £176.48
All prices include VAT at 20%. A VAT receipt can be provided.

- once we hit 10 people I will post up the current cost and those 10+ can decide whether to proceed
- once we hit 20 people we will start to look to close the list and commence production
- a deposit of £50 GBP is payable when the list closes
- production is realistically 7-8 weeks, but can be as little as 3-4 dependent on current loadings
- once the hubs are in my hands you pay the balance and they are shipped via insured courier

There will be no problems this time round with getting boxes, testing or anything else as I have double the amount of boxes I need and everything is tested already.

Realistically I would say this list will close after the summer and you'll get your hubs in time for winter maintenance. Please don't post your name if you are in a rush and a supply in Autumn won't do, or if its speculative, its not fair on others.

Novacaine now has a set. I believe Algirdas will want 2 but there is plenty of time.

Just while I was correcting the list I put Algirdas on, have PMed him, there's no commitment just now anyway until we hit 10 people.

Hi,
Is this group buy still going on, or can anyone tell where those custom rear hubs are available at the moment?

Can you confirm for a dunce - these hubs allow you to keep all the stock rear brakes as-is but just fit cheaper standardised discs?

If that is the case - then I'll take a set as it sounds like they pay for themselves when it comes to replacing the rear discs...

Quite correct Jon. You get purely a hub and bearings and then buy a standard "top hat" shaped disc to fit. The hubs with bearings costs £176 (can't remember pence!), but see above for conditions, and a pair of discs about £16-£20. I bought new Mintex discs from e-bay for £16. Fitted them this week: very asy job and in future I will only need to spend £16 to replace the discs instead of £200+

And Johan as far as I know this 2nd buy is still live: they are not available anywhere else unless a set is left over from the first buy (unlikely).

I have taken the liberty of adding both your names to the group buy: please remove them if I've over done it!!!

When the list gets to 12 people I am going to check the current price for producing 10-12 sets of these. It can be done, I'll need to know if everybody on the list still wants, and/or is in a rush or no hurry at all.

I have the replacement Brembo Max brake discs, but no hubs to fit them.
The original discs are still fine, so no hurry.
