Just another small Electricall upgrade i done In my Elan,
This one is designed for those who use the phone in the car, either as a satnav or as a music devise to plug to the radio.
Im sure you guys noticed that those cigarrete lighter USB chargers are damn slow to charge a phone.
I came acrossthis little gadget while wandering through fleabay looking for colored electrical wires.
After some investigation on power over USB I concluded that 3amps was the top available on current specs, from experience the mains plug is a hell lot faster to charge than the multiple cigerrete adapters i have. (ranging in prices from £1 to £5 ) making me reash the assumption that this particular charger cant be slower than the mains plug.
Now to the instalation process.
this is incredibly easy, as the radio is one of those periferals that is most changed, most of us will be able to take it off without any problems.
From the electrical manual (page 21) we know that the puple wire is a constant feed to the radio (memory) and black is as usuall earth.
there is also the live feed from the radio through the ignition switch as an alternative, although i do not know the color of the wire.
I tapped into the "always on" purple wire using a scoth lock and another scotch lock to the black and voila, power is on.
I then put all the wires back into the fascia panel and brought out the 2 USB connectors from the side, without damaging anything just to keep the parts all as stock as possible.
An alternative for all those who do not worry about keeping the car as stock as possible is to make some holes in the ashtray and put the URBs hidden in there.
I did not bother with that although i have a spare ashtray interior bit in the garage.
And here is a couple of pictures to show the wiring and end result.
It is worth noting that your wiring will probably be a log cleaner than mine, a previous owner must have installed an aftermarket radio in a very crude DIY way as the radio i had there previously did not have a ISO connector and other owners tell me the cars came from factory with ISO connectors, i simply took out everything from the previous connection and put my own ISO connector there using the bullet connectors i had at hand. not a pretty job but no one will see it but me

PS.
If anyone has some spare switches (the fog light type) let me know.
im thinking a fog light switch connected to the circuit would allow feedback to us when the power is on, and control over it manually which would allow you to avoid draining the battery in case you forgot the phone in the car overnight. (both problems can be sorted by wiring the usb to the ignition, but that wouldnt be fun..)

Original Fitment on SE was Pioneer that used ISO so dead easy to replace with Blaupunkt etc..
