I wouldn't wish to call any seller a liar (until they've proved that they ARE one!), but the problem is they can say anything and by the time you work out the truth it can be too late. While I've never been stung when buying an Elan, there have been occasions where sellers have deliberately hidden crucial details about other cars' pasts from me. One car turned out to be a bodged Cat D, and another had the digital milometer actually drilled-through, and then a piece of black card slipped under the dial face to hide the true mileage!

When you're not used to buying and selling it's easy to forget that the pleasant, friendly person in front of you is being that way for a reason:
They want as much as they can possibly get out of you, and they may overlook "the inconvenience of" being honest. ;-)

So I would always advocate going to http://www.mytextcheck.com and texting the reg number to 83600 if you're seriously considering buying a car. It only costs £3 on your phone bill and while it won't cover all eventualities, it does offer a bit of peace of mind.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P

BCingU,
Neil ;-)

One of the cheapest checks is https://totalcarcheck.co.uk/

Some research carried out showed that for some dealers HPI clear merely meant it didn't have outstanding finance.

outstanding finance on a 25 year old car... that would be impressive

Er, that's not impossible, especially when cars such as RS Escorts are circa £20k
I actually know of an XR3i being offered with finance.

Not so impressive  The car could be 50 years old and if someone took out a loan and reneged on the payments it would become a debt and therefore be flagged up

as far as im aware, the only way you can get a loan on a car over 7 years (in fact none of the companies i work with goes over 5) would be a personal loan, the residual value of a car after this period is so low, the lenders consider it too risky to give you money with the car as a warranty.
i believe there are exceptions, in case of specialist classic car / replica lenders. unfortunately my boss never secured a contract with one of these so i dont know much on their business, just know they exist because last year we almost got a contract with one of them.

There are many firms offering all types of finance, even for restoration, with absolutely no timescale.

www.classicandsportsfinance.com/sports-finance-options

We are finding more and more older vehicles with outstanding finance, so just be aware.

goes to prove me wrong, as well that the niche market must be profitable.

I wonder how can they do a PCP deal on a F50 ? its bound to evaluate the residual. theoretically they would have to pay you to maintain the car.

I did HPI check in '95 prior to buying my first ' 91 Elan SE from the first owner who was a private seller. My main concern was whether he might still have finance on it. It cost £28.50 and gave me all clear on "Security Watch, Stolen Vehicle, Outstanding Finance, Condition Alert, Condition Inspected and Plate Transfer" but also provided guarantee to repay £10,000 (their max) of the £13,250 I'd agreed to pay if I had any problems with those issues, so thought it worthwhile. Had that SE 4 years and put 120,000 miles on it. Next one I bought from Chris Neil Ltd for a similar price but didn't bother with HPI when buying from an established trader with a reputation to maintain.

A real good bit of advice. Don't forget that MIAFTR is now 30 years old and Insurers may still make a claim for any vehicles registered within this period even though PNC delete them after 6 years.

This kind of advert / seller infuriates me . Starts on the button ?
all keys and books are here ? what books ? The service history book not shown but hidden by 2 pieces of paper

Not been out in the rain ? what today ? or ever ?

Full service receipt for £400 . which includes removing the alarm , NOT replacing the spark plugs.
Read the invoice and it sounds like a car that has had the minimum amount of work to get it moving ,having been sat up for a long while ... brakes seized. wiper blades perished , hinges stiff , brake pipes corroded , number plates delaminating ( thats strange for a car thats never been out in the rain)

Judging from the MOT history available online, I would suggest that it would benefit from a PAS rack recon, and the 'New' MOT was over a month ago....

looks okay, but I would want to see it in person before putting a stronger bid on it.

The bidding history looks very dodgy to me. Only 18 minutes into a day sale and its gone up from £0.99 to £159 then numerous bids over the next few hours taking it to £3000 with 6 days to go. I suspect the seller has had his mates round for Xmas and they've been sitting round the fire with a few tinnies banging in bids

Highly suspicious

PS Gotta be worth it for the ABS brakes though. Another EBay clown !!
