Hang on, I realise that my car has been subject to insurance write off and I've spent a packet getting it back to where it should be (though less than I might of without Dave's largess!) and its value might be a bit compromised but to suggest that former write offs are 'dogs' is a bit harsh!

Not trying to start a big online argument at all .

Any car can be fully restored with deep enough pocket ..
Just like any painting can be restored after a fire with only a scrap of it left .

This car was bad 10 years ago . so unless someone has cared for it in the 6 years since i saw it ( then the last 4 years have been hard for it as it is now a track car with extra damage occurred)
Many many better cars have been scraped for less . ( does that make it right ?)
It starts a whole new subject of Originality V rebuild from other parts .

I hav no issue with a cat D car if it has been repaired properly . I would imagine many of our cars would have been labeled cat D if we hadn't repaired them lovingly ourselves . With Lotus prices it doesn't take much to make anything an uneconomical repair . But the nature of fickle people and cars will make any Cat worth less .

But this car really is a dog .. i assume that dave is talking about the facts he can see.

Once categorised it can never be anything else but that
no service history and pages ripped out the original handbook . it can never be re found .
high owners , it can never be turned back .
badly repaired and run like it for years can only harm the set up , geo ,
M100 SP is a marked car .. any credibility it ever had as a good car went years ago .
without very very deep pockets THIS CAR will always be a dog .

I think you may have miss read his quote ..
he is taking about this car not cars in general.

EDIT ..
And while we are at it .
We seemed to have talked s2 wheels up to £1500 .
The last set that sold for £1500 where pretty decent wheels with decent tyres from a fellow LEC member .
not a set from a track car ..

Pete,

Perhaps the way I wrote that wasn't the way that it reads.....

....I'm in no way suggesting that all previously written-off cars are dogs...... but this one in particular is!

We all know that there are various categories of 'write-off', and to site a case I know a bit about, look no further than my red elan. It was written off by the insurance company as being beyond economical repair - due entirely to the lack of availability of parts..... but it was still basically a 'good' car which was repairable and would have made a great base for a 'track car'.

In the case of this Medina one, it was written off whilst still young enough to be fully supported by the factory parts list, which tells me that it had quite a serious bump early in its life.

Having been written off, it has been rebuild (on a budget), using second-hand panels, poorly fitted. It is the work/parts required to get those bits right which makes this particular car a canine.

Of course, should someone with the correct skills (or desire to learn them) get there hands on it, it could be put right.....if the other parts required are availlable to them (new or S/H - or even remade).

10 years ago this car was looked at by a well-respected, knowledgable elaner (just after Clemo went to see it ;-) ) and it's condition was poor.

I think that the car found its natural place in lifes order by becoming a 'track car' - which is a tad different to a car which happens to venture onto track ocassionally.

I know that a purely 'track' car can get away with being less than a road car in many ways (usually cosmetic) and still provide plenty of enjoyment for the driver/owner, and I wouldn't slate anyone for doing such things (it's what I do with my Dolomites).

What I am saying is that for someone to buy this car expecting to have a nice example for road use, there is a lot of work to do on it - probably far beyond its current (potential) value.

I appologise for any offence I may have caused by suggesting that all written-off cars are 'unworthy' - that certainly wasn't my intention.

Oops - i was writing this whilst Clemo was also writing his post so didn't see it until I submitted it..... but I think we are in agreement that THIS CAR is a dog for lots of reasons.

I noticed that it had gone - waiting for it to be re-listed now.......

...... I am still happy to stick with the bid I submitted before he withdrew it (shortly after I sent him a few questions :? ), so we'll see.

I was rather hoping that my questions to him may get seen by other people, and it would put them off bidding, so I'd get it for a better price.

I can just see it now, flying across the deserts of Western Asia, bits falling off at every bump, and strange noises coming from everywhere.......

anyway, im not interested in red elans. they remind me of red mr2 gen2 which in turn where nicknamed the ferrary of the poor.

both cars in red look like attempts to copy the f40 and f50. in fact. i have seen more than onse mr2s with bodykits pretending to be ferraris

Mark,
I thought that you were going for one car of each colour, to suit whatever outfit you happen to be wearing.
