Yep - that's where I got my information that the wheels were advised as being buckled.....

Tuga2112 wrote:however you have to also consider different garages will have extremely different standards.

In the MOT history for this particular car, the tests have been performed at 5 different test centres (one was a week after a failure at one place, and the second garage picked up most of the same faults - so maybe the standards of testing aren't that different....

....and I also reiterate my earlier point that the seller is saying that there is no current MOT on the car, but the gov site states that it is covered until 23rd April :? (what is he trying to hide????)

How did you look up the MOT history as I can't see the full number plate in any of the pictures. I asked a question about the wheels on eBay and he's just replied;

The wheels are all straight and in perfect condition, apart from being quite dirty

Having responded in writing to me I have to presume they are as he says they are.

Just to keep to the theme of slagging off all cars on ebay as being dogs......

.... a failure for a single number plate bulb seems a little harsh to me - what is he trying to hide....

....it looks like a worry to me

But on a serious note - it isn't a car I've ever seen before, and (from the pictures) haven't seen one in such good looking condition (interior looks pristine) - except the well-restored ones we all know and love.

If you're after an original, unmolested elan then this has to be worth a look.

Okay, so if you're going to put it in storage and only use it occassionally, there should be no major expenses forseeable, but if you're going to use it, then I would suggest that all moving rubber bits (belts, tyres) get looked at - also that the brakes are given an overhaul to ensure that they are sliding freely.... then you should be good to go for a fair old while.

Whilst Frost Silver isn't my favourite colour on an elan (ducks for cover to avoid all the comments from others on this hugely personal choice!), I would still find room for it if I was looking for one in this condition.

I don't think that the price is unrealistic with the provenance available, and hope it finds a good home.

At the moment, there seems to be a few 'nice' ones about (Paul Matty had a white one I'd also consider to be in a similar market position - a little higher mileage, but a lower price), and the prices aint all bad.

It still isn't to be considered an 'investment' though (to me!), but it does show that great cars will attract stronger money....... and to be honest, it's still only the cost of many new cars that are a year old with higher mileage.

Dave,
I'm confused :?
Ref this car http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111893511888?ul_noapp=true

You'd mentioned it had an MOT history and that the number plate was clearly visible in the additional photos he sent you. However he's just emailed me about 15-20 photos and in the place of the number plate is "AUTOGEM". I emailed him again for the registration number and looked up the MOT history and its MOT ran out on the 8th February 2011.
Where did you get the info about the MOT until April and the 3 buckled wheels?

Andy, the car has had a least 3 different registration numbers (that I know of) during it's known time on this forum - the only thing to remain constant is the 'limited edition' number, and (presumably) the VI number.

I have checked as much as I can with the information I can ascertain, and it doesn't sit right to me.

Now, I may be a cynical old git, but I lost interest a while ago in this car (and seller).... suffice to say that if I still had access to the systems I had before I retired, I'd possibly have been able to find out a lot more than I'd be prepared to disclose anyway ;-)

Dave,
Thanks. I was just hoping it might be a way to get some of the expensive bits I would like but at £1800+ and dubious wheels it would be a bit reckless. I did notice in one of the pics he emailed me that the offside rear wheel had quite a flat spot. At best the wheel probably wouldn't balance or would need a diving weight to do so. Since it would appear not to have been MOT'd for a while I doubt he would have replaced any bent wheels and wouldn't be too fussy about a bit of wheel vibration around a track. From the pics it looks like he has well and truly driven the guts out of it.

Shame; having seen the pics I can't imagine anyone taking that on for a restoration project so it'll probably be broken up for parts. My concern is that people will bid on the basis of the low res photos on eBay but if they saw the photos I've just received I'm not sure he would have got the bids he has. Another nice coloured Elan destined for parts?

Thanks for the warning. Its what the forum is here for.

Re: ALL CARS ON EBAY.

Andy,

As with all things, I can only really express my own opinion on things - all I will say is that I have made enough enquiries to rule myself out for this one, but that isn't to say that it may or may not suit someone elses requirements.

The MOT history only tells some of the story - and if the seller has stated that all wheels are good and true, then he (or someone else) *may* have either had them repaired or replaced in the past, or there may just be an error in the computer records.

As stated previously, my intention would have been to buy it cheap(ish), salvage the 'value' from the car whilst retaining it's ability to drive under it's own steam, then see how far I could drive it across the deserts to Khazakstan before it expired, but if it made it, it would then be given to a charity to get whatever they can for it (because there are a number of other stupid enough idiots on here to think that this sort of expedition is a great idea, Stevo, Clemo etc :D )..... oh well, I'll have to find a different 'banger' to buy.

I believe that there are still a number of parts on the car which would be usefull to others, or to sell on, and it is quite probable that it is still in the 'break even' value window to someone who wants/needs the parts, and has the time and space to deal with it.

It is always possible to fully restore any car, given enough time and money, but to be realistic, there are better starting points than this one - eventually, there will be so few of these about that everything will be worth saving, but that isn't the case at this time :(

When a drivable, usable, MOT'd elan with service history etc can be purchased for not much more than this one, (allowing for the fact that £2k is a lot of money for some people, and smaller change for others), and even the 'top' cars (like the Silver or White ones referenced in an earlier post) can be had in the £10-£15K bracket, this is really a 'track weapon' or breaker (just my own opinion - someone else may feel that it is a 'saver').

I hope that there is always some availability of 'project' cars (otherwise I'll have nowt to buy!), and they are getting a bit thinner on the ground with every car which is broken/scapped, and this car may well find itself in a different situation in a few years time.

For arguements sake, lets assume that someone were to buy it, keep it in a barn somewhere, with a few track days every year just for fun, traillered to and from events, it would cost very little to keep as it is - and then in a few years time it may well find a home with someone who is prepared to restore it when availability of oithers is reduced - who knows??????

I don't recall

I went up and saw that car Jamie. Was about 10 months ago. I spoke to the guy for about an hour, and he even offered me a part ex on the car I was trying to sell at the time. The interior was very dirty and tired, mouldy seats etc. And it would have needed the brakes sorted and the cam belt done before you could get it on the road. The owner was asking for £5,000 at the time, which was far too much. But the owner was convinced that the E14N PP plate was worth £2,000 so really it was a £3,000 car. It could be a decent project for someone, but it just wasn't what I was looking for.

It's looking a lot better than the last time I saw it, especially the interior. Went for £4300 as well.

Jamie, im surprised you didn't notice that a couple of the pictures from the ad were taken in the glorious kingdom of Fife

Haha!, I did notice that Liam. although its the "Inglorious Kingdom" in my eyes (I'm not a Fifer!) :D , no offence to any Fifers who frequent the board :P , I thought it was you that went to see it. If the interior had mould 10 months ago you can imagine what it was like a month ago after sitting on a driveway with rotted seals, although it did have a cover over it at times that would only have lead to an even better environment for bacteria to flourish.

It has been a really bad winter for mould growing in cars, virtually everything coming in the yard has been covered with it inside, some you could not even tell what color the seats were, nasty stuff.

Liam - the seller was still looking for £5000 for the car (buy it now) according to the advert so the bidding fell a bit short. It finally went for £4350

And the advert also stated that he/she had been offered £1500 for the E14 NPP plate.

Ref the Burgundy one for £4250 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lotus-elan-m1 ... SwKtlWp-eG
Its been around for a while so I've no idea why it hasn't sold. I like the colour and the bonnet vents would be an easy fix as replacement bonnets appear all the time on eBay so it would be fairly simple to get one painted in the same colour. Anybody actually been to see it?
