Conversely if the winning bidder bids £50 more than you he would win it by the minimum amount to better your bid, ie £1. So even if you had bid another £5 more, he would still have beaten you by £1 until you bid enough to beat his (hidden) bid of £50 more.
This wins my bid for the 2016 Plain English awards. Don't they have a category in Private Eye for these type of things

Not strictly true. All you need do is put in the maximum bid you are prepared to pay, and ebay will keep raising your bid progressively up to that level when someone else bids, until you are beaten. But you only ever pay enough to beat any other bid below yours by the minimum amount. So you could bid £50 for something but actually only pay £29, or whatever, if only lower bids come in. So you never really know how much you lost it by: it just appears to be only £1. Yes there are buying apps you can cheat with, but I don't bother: just put in the maximum you are prepared to pay and let it run its course. If you win, you will get it for any value from the minimum bid or reserve up to your maximum. If you lose, you weren't prepared to pay more anyway.
Although that is basically true, you need to take into account the newbies that will increase their bid by very small increments until they get figure they can't afford anything higher and stop; only to have the process started again by the next newbie. That suddenly makes all the other inexperienced buyers think there is gold included in the offering and they all chip away at the high end of your bid. The best method is still to make your best bid AT THE END of the bid process so only those that really understand the proper value get to compete. It is my conclusion that "bids" should be ceased and only "Buy it Now" listings allowed. If nobody buys it, the seller will realize he is excessively optimistic and will re-list it at a more reasonable price. Then, the buyer with the best search capabilities will be able to buy at what he thinks is fair. I have over 8,000 feedbacks on FleaBay mostly for laptop parts and am always annoyed by the buyers with 3 or 4 feedbacks jumping on the "Broken" I7 offerings" from the salvage companies that start at $1.00 and run them up to over $100.00 only to finally realize that the listing says there is no CPU, Memory or Drives and the LCD is cracked. Meanwhile, I was usually looking for the plastics which are worth under $20.00 and someone else gets stuck with the high priced scrap. Usually, the same item reappears in a couple of weeks since the buyer never completed the sale. It seems that the car sales area has similar issues. The only one making money on FleaBay anymore is FleaBay.

Not mine but I have seen this car. I sold him some replacement seats for it as his were torn. Replacements were excellent. He's undersold it to be honest. The bodywork is pretty much immaculate. I'm tempted to bid on this myself.

He was listing a steel blue bodytub last week for £50......
..... seems like he sells things as much for the interest as the profit - nowt on his list has a stupid start price, and thereafter it's all down to the bidders

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Hello Clemo (again) this is one of my old cars, has a collapse colour code, and red in boot area. Went out to Australia, came back about 1993, sun damage to dash, but underneath is literally like new! and engine is tip top. if it was not for the shadey history we would have kept it. I had a phone call from a really nice chat in Sussex who bought it (I think his name is Alex) ps I/we spent loads on it to get the lights to work properly (opera glass) and other bits and bobs
Oh, now up for sale again! poor thing, keeps getting more expensive though?
