Removing and replacing seized fasteners

Postby Paul Hague » Tue 05.04.2016, 19:45

I could think about replacing the rubber lip that runs under the front bumper, but I know the fitting screws are seized solid. If I simply grind the heads off, will I ever be able to get the rest of the screw out, and what are they screwed into? I don't know the correct name but I guess 'plastic captive nuts'??

Ditto the shallow 'undertray' that extends the width of the car under the radiator and secured by the same sort of shallow headed bolts as hold the wheel-arch liners and also aren't shifting. Rawl-nuts in this case? Removing this would have been useful when replacing the first radiator fan and I think will be necessary if I have to do the second.

Hi Paul

I have always been forced to grind off the screws that hold the rubber lip in place. The screws go into a variety of fixings in my experience - rawlnuts and speedfix nuts.

The shallow headed bolts for the tray under the radiator screw into the radiator support bracket - nuts welded in place.

Paul,
Unfortunately my experience was similar; everything had to be ground off and drilled out. I replaced everything with stainless fixings. I did the rubber lip while the bumper was off and it was a lot easier than trying to do it on the car. If I had to do it again I would take the bumper off unless you can put the car up on a ramp. The replacement rubber lip (mine was from SJ's) had to be cut to go round the corners to keep a good shape (use the old rubber as a guide). The metal strips that held it in place will probably have fallen to dust by now but I found they weren't needed anyway.

The thing is can you live with it as its a lot of work for little cosmetic gain? I did mine because I was replacing the radiator and refurbing the rad support frame amongst other things.

Thanks for that. Definitely a job I can live without - was flushed with success after getting the wheel-arch liners out to do the headlamp motors :-)

Are the bolts that hold the undertray like part number A075W1082Z as described on SJSportscars website as 'Wheel arch liner to body M6 thin head ' ?

Have searched their site but can't find any bolts referring to the undertray.

If you look at the parts list (down loadable from this site) in Section 12, page 12.01 you will see the undertray and associated fixings and part numbers. It is a "set screw" M6 x 18. part no A075W1029Z and the cage nut is M6 part no A100W6362F, neither of which appear on SJS website :( :(

But since the nut and bolt are both described you could buy them at any decent fixings shop :D :D

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I've banged quite a few part numbers into their wrbsite but with no results. Talked to them this morning and think I've got most bits I need. They even took a part number from me and said it didn't work online but did work offline - whatever that means !!
