Measurement needed...

Wondering if some of the kind folks of the board could measure the distance from the front edge of their hood to the plastic strip that runs along the top of the windscreen , basically the gap that the "top lip" of the header seal sits in with the roof up, on mine the gap is approx 5mm but i think that is probably less than the average?.

Mines between 6/7mm .... won't it also depend on how much pull there is on the hood catches at the front ...

I do expect this puts me top of the list

Thanks chaps . Wont be any group buys here though im afraid, will let you in on a wee secret though.. Header seal sussed!,with a totally different concept altogether, this is the one seal out of them all that needs banished to the dustbin where they belong, I reckon the header is the worst seal on the Elan, its water sucking properties need to seen to be believed (Mark ) then when its truly sodden which doesn't take very long, all the water runs to each end and drips into the car.. leading peeps to believe its the A pillar seals leaking when its actually the header sponge.

Anyway still refining the new development but provisionally its looking incredible, details to follow. .

I got dripped on when it wasn't even raining and hadn't been since the day before!

Rain only comes in the a pillar seals in the heaviest of downpours, but it doesn't take much for it to come in the header seal, drip onto the sun visor, down the steering wheel and into my lap. And it's getting worse. I've taken to tucking a cloth under the sun visors.
I've got a big gap between the hood and windscreen on the passenger side but this is the less leaky side. Someone did tell me that the tighter the seal the more likely it is to leak because the water has nowhere to go.

Sounds about right Kathryn, when I changed my header seal for a rubber one the car hadn't been out in the rain for weeks and had been in a dry garage yet the header seal was still full of water ( which also rusts the latch screws solid), It's just a bad idea plain and simple, I dont think I have ever seen another car that uses open cell sponge for seals, the 306 convertible uses a foam / sponge type of seal but its closed cell and doesn't become waterlogged. The only real long term solution is to remove the sponge and replace it with a rubber one, or... Never take your Elan out in the wet.
