Hood frame rubbing on stowage lid

Hi Folks. been for a drive today around Matlock, Ashbourne and so on. Great drive and wonderful scenery, made all the better with the roof down, but at times i had what sounded like like a hyperactive budgie sat with me. When i got home i found it was the hood frame rubbing on the lip of the stowage lid.

so, is the hood frame meant to touch the lid, or sit lower down? also, if anyone else has had this problem, how did you solve it?

i am thinking of either wrapping a bit of black insulation tape, or glueing a strip of 1.5 mm thick neoprene seal around the hood frame where it touches the lid, but i would like to know if the frame should actually sit lower when stowed away.

My early S1 has a velcro strap in the bottom of the hood storage area that goes around the hood and ties it down. I'm not sure if this was a factory item or not, but I don't use it that often as I don't tend to have any issue with the hood rubbing when it's down.

I guess I should say that the hood isn't the original and was replaced about 15 yeas ago before I owned the car, perhaps the strap was fitted then. Either way could be a solution to the rubbing problem.

I'm on my 3rd Elan and before satnavs I used to keep a large Philip's Navigator Road Atlas (GB at 1.5" to 1 mile so large & thick) and a coat on the shelf and my hood sat on those when down and didn't cause any problems with clearance. Just been out to look at mine and put the hood down and noticed that if the front hood catches are sprung up (into the open position) they do make contact with the underside of the lid so that may be your 'budgie' noise generator rather than frame. My hood just lies there with enough clearance to get my hand & wrist in between hood and lid.

thank for the replies everyone.

i have solved it, and it was my fault

it was the sides of the hood frame that were rubbing on the stowage lid. i had not put the front hood tensioner behind the two upright catches that lock the stowage lid down.
this caused the hood to sit slightly higher when stowed.

put it right tonight, and now there is about a 1 cm gap between the hood frame sides and the bottom lip of the stowage lid.

we learn from our own mistakes, eh.

That is on my list of things to look at over winter - surely it is possible to change the pivot point of the bars to prevent this common problem. I have already changed the front part of the hood to prevent the fabric being pinched and cut
