Front Number plate

I don't know about anybody else but the front number plate seems to be a bit flimsy in its fitting. I have a standard size plate which is screwed in near the top corners at either end. This makes it a bit wobbly a bit from top to bottom.

Is this standard fitment ?

I could cut my plate down as its a couple of characters shorter but then I would have to drill new holes leaving two to block up.

Other idea was to get a stick on plate but I'm sure theres not quite enough space to put it without going over one of the creases in the bodywork. Has anybody ever done this ? Did it look s**t ?

how many characters do you have and would this not leave drill holes visible ?

Also where does the plate sit . as in does the top of plate match up with top of the line running through the bumper or top of the plate line up with the bottom of the running line ?

If you are a few letters digits short old this not put more tension on the plate ?

I have seen vinyl plates on the bonnet similar to E type jag versions but it didn't look very nice at all .

From what remember the Elan was not designed with a number plate in mind ... not sure where i picked that up from .

i have also seen L shaped brackets coming of the lower part of the bottom mesh grill . They did this on the 2 eleven .

Mine is a standard size plate and stuck on using Halfrauds finest sticky fixers with the top edge lined up with the bottom of the bumper groove. It may flap about in the breeze, but I've never been aware of it (hard to see from inside the car!). Looks solid enough in this pic from Combe.

@Clemo - Yes in answer to your first two questions. Not sure what you mean by the third.

If I stickered it the bottom of the plate would sit in line with the top of the groove going through the bumper - so basically putting it directly above where it is now. Think it would then go over the line above also so yes, would look s**t.

Mine is positioned like the yellow one but holes very top corner.

On my old Pacific Blue I put a JDM style number plate plinth in black plastic and shaped the edges to conform with the shape of the bumper, it looked pretty good, and being an OEM part it didn't look like a modification. Similar type to this... http://www.autolinkmx5.com/ekmps/shops/ ... 2550-p.jpg but it sat proud of the bumper about 30mm.

Another type is those Stainless steel "tilt" ones, now that would look like a mod! .

Hmmmm .... well spotted one and all - maybe I was having a Alfa Romeo envy day. I blame the cross eyed tw*t of a fitter and would strongly recommend that you don't use him - although the materials and methodology may have potential otherwise.

It'll be further over to the right once we've been Brexited and you have to cut off the EU bit with the stars on the LHS. And then it will definitely be more Alfa Romeo'ish

My front plate is on a plinth. It's not a perfect fit, but it's not bad. Maybe it's from an MX5? I'll take a picture next time I see the Elan (it lives in my Parent's garage).
