MOT due in under 2 weeks

You probably need to check when the cambelt was last replaced
Check the rear hub conversion ie is it from the 1st Jeemy run ?
Check state of jacking points/outriggers, front and rear wishbones etc....

Jaycee only joined yesterday so probably doesn't know what the heck you're talking about...

Jon, several batches of hub conversions have been produced through owners on this forum, early runs were organised by 'Bob Brown' and more recent ones by 'Jeemy'. There is 'an issue' with some of the last batch (2nd run) of Jeemy hubs being slightly oversize so the bearing is a slack fit. What you need to check is the bearing is the usual bearing interference fit (drift in, drift out) in the hub and not the slack version (drops in, drops out)...

Thanks Phil

I should have introduced myself a little better - sorry:

I'm a complete petrol head but mechanically a numpty so all work on my cars gets sub'd out. I blame the late Roger Moore for my love of the lotus brand. Went from S1>S2 Elise - then to a 7 Superlight. Always fancied an Elan, the sun and beer got the better of me, thus ending up buying J Bra blind.

Dropped it at the garage that does most of the work on my cars. Few things to sort, he seems to be having a problem sourcing "rear drop links" what ever they are!?

I figured as a £4k purchase - if I throw a bit of money at it - should be a tidy example for still sensible money.

Thanks
Jon

SJ Sports Cars tend to carry most parts in stock for the Elan, there are other Lotus specialist that will also be more useful than the local motor factors for bits & pieces.

Link to droplinks on SJ website:-

I bought mine on impulse also (without the excuse of alcohol), good choice on the colour :D

You'll need to enter Part No A100C6011F into Par's link to SJS as it only brings up the general parts search page, for me anyway.

Unfortunately SJS prices have VAT & P&P to be added on so the initial reaction of 'that's not so bad' often ends up as "bloody hell, that much !" Keep the old ones and rebush them for a fraction of the cost and you'll never ever have to replace them again. (Sod's 2nd Law - if you have a spare it won't be that part that fails.)

Welcome to LEC! And enjoy your car. I was an impulse buyer too, but it worked out OK.

Put your location in your profile so we know where you are and local members may be able to help you if necessary. Accessed via the control panel tab at top of page.

A number of us are at Castle Combe this weekend for the Club Lotus do. Pop along if you can, with or without your Elan!

Seeing as I am a bit of a cheapskate, I have tried searching elsewhere for the drop links on your behalf (they are the same front and rear, so 4 on a car).

They are listed as obsolete from Lotus, Southwest Lotus don't list it online, neither do Paul Matty - but may be worth a phone call if they are local to you.

I know Bob Brown made some up a few years ago, before the great incident that should never be mentioned in a polite society.... the point being, that they are not a hard item to fabricate.

Basically, it is "just" a steel bar joining 2 bushes.... okay, so the dimensions are a bit critical, and they need to be strong enough to do the job - but if you know a decent fabricator, they should be a fair bit cheaper to knock some up than buying 4 (only a thought - and if I actually needed some, it'd get a lot more thought!!!!).

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Thanks - I may well do that, Elan wont be finished - but I guess a Cat7 (sort of) counts as a Lotus!?

Chatting to the mechanic yesterday, he suggested fabricating or even trying to referb the ones in place.

Thanks for the advice

Rebush is all that's usually needed - For dampers I've usually pressed rubber bushes out with sockets and an engineer's bench vice, and pressed new ones in with some brake fluid as lube and the bench vice..

Never needed to replace them in drop links but they look damper size.... For suspension bushes I saved this link as a possible supplier, and they may do drop link bushes...https://www.powerflex.co.uk/road-series/fitting-guides

I am the owner of the car that has several mentions on here, currently on sale on ebay with registration problems due to replacement chassis and engine.

Some interesting points raised, some correct, some not! It seems that some are under the impression that it is going via the 'radically altered vehicle' route, under which a points tally system is used. The car would not pass that 8 point rule. It is going via the the DVLA 'reconstructed classic' rules and they have confirmed in writing to me that this will be acceptable. My car just needs an inspection by a Lotus club and to verify all the major components are over 25 years old, which they are (including the replacement chassis on an N age number in the chassis stamping, early 1992) The DVLA have confirmed back to me that this will be acceptable then a an age related registration of the youngest component (the chassis) will be issued.

I have the car on at £2500 which is pretty cheap given the general condition but I will take £2000 as is if the new buyer wants to do the legwork with Club Lotus and the DVLA themselves.

CAR IS NOW SOLD

As mine was bought on a whim, with (shamefully) very little research, I've been trying to ascertain where values are on M100's - I have no intention of moving mine on BTW, just curious.

£3,000 - £5000 - something needing a bit of work or tidying
£5,000 - £8000 - a tidy example with good history
£8000+ top end of market, should be pretty mint

Was chatting to an Elan owner at a car show over the bank holiday. His was in really good shape (on the face of it) and paid £1800 for it five years ago. That's a hell of an increase.

Sound about right on the market at the mo?

Cheers
Jon

I think your price summary is a reasonable guide. Prices do not seem to have changed a great deal in the 10 years I have owned mine.

RE the red car located in Newcastle. Does the rear wheel look off centre within the wheel arch. If it is offset is it a big job to re-centre it?
