Pic of a standard SE & S2 remote locking fob pls?

Remote central locking has stopped working now. The key fob I have looks the spitting image of a universal remote central locking fob I can see on ebay and amazon.

I've been searching for a picture of the standard S1 and S2 key fobs but cant find one. Does this look standard to you, either S1 or S2?

Definitely NOT for S2. The S2 had the central locking integrated with the alarm (no separate central locking module). The master key has an alarm/CDL trigger integrated in it and an activation button on the key itself. There’s also a separate alarm trigger unit, which is rectangular in shape with (from memory) a red and a yellow button on it.

Can’t send any pictures as I’ve now removed my old inoperative OEM alarm and replaced it with a Toad, but the picture you show is certainly not Elan S2 OEM kit.

Not that bothered about an alarm but I'm thinking of getting an immobiliser. Perhaps that would fix my issue then

No. OE remote for SE was thin black & rectangular with a Lotus logo emboosed. One red button, one black. Got one at home but I'm away so can't post photo for a few days. They preceeded Thatcham approval so insurance companies wanted them changed to something that had it so you won't find many still fitted.

Thanks very much. I now know I'll probably be looking for a odd non-standard box some where.

I told my insurance co I didn't have an immobiliser or alarm and it's on my policy - they didn't increase the premium at all!

As I understand it, the SE central door locking system (CDL) has a trigger in each door and a central actuator behind the dash on the drivers side (RHD). From what you say, it sounds as though the system on your car has been’enhanced’ with a third party fitment

As I mentioned, the S2 is different in that the CDL works directly off the alarm. I have retrofitted a Toad Ai606 alarm/immobiliser which works everything very successfully, including the central locking.

As an alternative, you could also fit a DIY immobiliser. I have one which cuts the electrical supply to the fuel pump, so the car won’t run. I did it as a temporary measure while I was waiting for the Toad to arrive, but I’ve never removed it. Alternatively, how about a push-button momentary switch which you have to press each time you start the engine? Relatively easy to wire up, and you can hide the switch in an inconspicuous place somewhere in the cabin. Just remember that you need be able to reach it when you’re belted in - just in case you ever stall the engine at the lights (of course, as a Lotus driver, you’d never do that )

I wouldn't pay silly money but I think it's really nice having it. Part of the history of the car

Did all the SEs have remote locking?

Mine doesn't have a fob (approx Oct 1990 build) , though it did come with a Gemini alarm remote fob (I've not tried to operate it for fear it may not work properly).

I've just been unlocking it the old fashioned way, with the key in the lock!

Just checked the Owners Manual, it's not mentioned in there.

That's because it was an optional extra. If you chose it you got LSL 281 tucked inside the polythene sleeve of the Owners Handbook.

Just found that I've also got LSL 288 - another supplement but about Soft Top Care and providing further guidance ...
bit I like is " Lotus does NOT recommend that the Elan is subjected to a mechanical (automatic) car wash as some types of brushes used in these devices may cause scratching of the flexible rear window, and accelerating ageing of the roof fabric."

Says nothing about occupants will probably get soaked and serve them right for being so stupid....

It does mention that when hood is erected, with windows lowered, the correct seal alignment should be made by hand .... Note to self .. remember to do passenger side, I rarely do...

Attached is a picture of my standard SE alarm remote control, keyfob and keyring with keys (ignition, door/boot, aftermarket steering lock). These are as they came from the dealer except for the following:

- the glove box key is not present (I keep it in the glove box). It looks like the ignition key.
- the gold paint has partially worn out of the engraved Lotus logo on the remote and there is a small chip on the edge of the bevel.
- the odd key next to the keyfob is for an after-market steering wheel lock bar.

Early days but it started working fine today. Either because I’ve been using the car quite frequently over the past few weeks and it’s worked it’s way free or could be the silicon lube I sprayed into the door locks

I put an order in for a new stereo and speakers along with a Viper immobiliser with remote CL. I’ll get the universal one removed while he’s at it. One way or another it’s getting fixed.
