inside light

Good evening.
On my car the 2 little lights under the inside mirror always light on
Maybey, it's the contact switch that has a problem, but where is it ?

One of the options for turning them on is to pull out the circular light switch selector ... are you sure yours isn't pulled out?

Its a GM thing. I believe the switch is from a Mk2 Astra.
I had owned GM/Vauxhalls before my Elan so knew to look there.

In case you're unsure whuch switch they are talking about, It's this one

Ensure it's pushed all the way in and the inside light should go out.

If it doesn't, investigate further

I'm nearly sure this switch isn't pulled out but i'll check that this week-end (not at home this week)

For the moment to turn this light off, i turn off the battery master switch

IN to OUT is a very small movement so might not be obvious when it's OUT. Other than that, the mirror bulb gets a permanent live feed and all the switches (on the mirror, circular light switch & door switches) provide an earth return path. A wire coming off and going to earth would put them on but unlikely on grp body & it would probably not always be in contact when driving either.

But, being serious, there is only about a 1-2mm difference between being in or out so Phil is totally correct When I got mg first M100 about 15 years ago the same thing happened to me in the infamous Rambo but I hadn't, as then, joined LEC and benefitted from the experience and wisdom of some of our learned members so there was much head scratching on my behalf

Always a good idea to read the Handbook Steve.... Page 13. Far easier to put interior lights on by that switch and I avoid touching my mirror as it''s stuck back on the glass with Superglue.

Does your remote-control door locking work OK? Do the door lock buttons stay down? If not then the problem might be the microswitch in the doors (or the connections to it) which controls both the door lock and the lights in the mirror.

it's a little bit more complicated than that - it would be, it's a Lotus. I remember seeing "a right load of coloured spaghetti" when I had my door cards off.

The Central Locking diagram (Sheet 20) shows a 'Door Ajar' switch that is part of the latch, using Red/Slate wires, and if the door is ajar those contacts are closed to cause the Central Locking to 'bounce out' after a second or two... but being ajar doesn't put the lights in the mirror on... the door has to open more than that (I've just tried it). Looking at the Interior Light diagram (Sheet 10) there is another set of contacts within the latch that use Purple/White wire. Just wait till I next see John Mountain ...

And they obviously weren’t satisfied, because they changed it again for the S2. All the wiring is there, but the separate door ajar switch is missing. (And no, it’s “intentionally blank”; I checked both sides.)
