Hoops Update.

The hoops jig will be with us soon John W is picking them up in the next week or so.
The templates and paperwork is with Simon who is away till the end of the month. Upon his return i will take a little jaunt to collect said items.

Hi all .
Just want to say thank you all for your interest in this item . This is a nice heathy number that should help assist us on this run. Whilst i have not much to add at this point ( apart from John W has done some epic legwork on our behalves) he holds the jig at the moment . Myself and Pinky are to take a trip up that their north to collect it and hopefully get the rest of the information from Simon upon his return to the UK ...

Once again thanks for your interest so far. It may only be a list .... but lists give me confidence in getting something remade.

Hi everyone. I have thought long and hard over the last few years about these roll hoops and at one point I convinced myself I had to have them. However, before I commit to join the Group Buy, has anyone checked to see how much protection would actually be given by the hoops?
What I'm about to write is not a pleasant thought but it is one that most of us will have imagined at some point.
If an Elan had the hoops fitted and ended up 'up-side-down' there is a good chance the car would rest on the bonnet and the tops of the hoops. I doubt if this would protect the head of the occupants at all.
I am not trying to be awkward, dismissive or controversial towards the hoops, and any reduction of injury to car occupants has to be a good thing. However, it takes a lot of effort to install the hoops and they won't be cheap.
I don't know what the answer is. For the hoops to offer better protection I expect they would have to be so tall that they would not fit under the roof and a full roll cage would be even more expensive and spoil the look of the cars with the roof down.
Perhaps there is no answer?

This particular topic has been discussed quite extensive. If you'd do a search on the forum you can find the relevant topics and opinions.
In the end it is solely your decision what you decide to do and what you consider additional safety value

Simon designed these along the same lines as the WRC stuff that he was designing at the time and made them a structural part of the car so they will stand up if upside down
The point of the hoops is to apply additional headroon
if you have seen pictures of cars that have ended up upside down you will realise that the windscreen collapses and the car rests on the headrest of the seat
If in doubt ask Graham, GUK, he managed to flip his and survived to tell the tale despite a few scuffs and bruises to his head
the additional room would allow you a considerable amount more than the non-existent support you have at the moment so to that end I would say that anything is better

In every picture I have seen of a roll-over M100, the windscreen is flat against the dash and intruding into the cockpit. I am clueless as to what Lotus used for their test car that made them think the windscreen was a structural component and would support the car in an accident. (Icouldn't find their exact phrasing, but it is in some of their advertising).

The hoops do add a small bit of solid height to the car, so in the event of a gentle roll-over, they will help.

In a violent roll-over, the driver's head will be all over the place and their neck will allow it go go above the hoops at times, so maybe doing neck strengthening exercises would be a good thing if anyone is going to drive with a huge amount of gusto.

In my opinion, ANYTHING is better than the current design, especially if you are worried about a roll-over event.

I have to concur with theelanman and BCN's comments. Anything that helps safety wise is surely a good thing and not one to be eschewed. And Colin, as you go rallying in yours, I would have thought you'd be first on the list. Yes they will be expensive to buy and fit, unless you can do the work yourself (I suggest you'd probably on the blower to Kenny Broon ) but what price safety ?

I found it. It is in the M100 Sales Training Manual...

The windscreen pillar is cast of high-strength aluminum and bolts directly to the tops of the A-pillars.
This assembly is strong enough to support the weight of the car in the event of a roll over.
