Hood Seals...The latest design.

Postby Jamie N » Thu 16.05.2019, 18:10

Another change to the status quo. Along the lines of making the header seal and A pillar seals all one, I have now done the same with the Intermediate and the forward seal on the side of the hood and made them into one. Well how is that going to work I hear you say!, absolutely simply I reply. :D

We all know that one of the main reasons the originals seals split apart is because of the contact they make with each other as the hood opens and closes, which due to the design of the hood is pretty much unavoidable, therefore the only real solution is to not have seals folding over the top of each other, hence we now have 'quick release' hood seals.

Unclip both of them, (takes seconds) store behind the seat or put in the boot, and watch the hood go down much more easily than if it had seals on it, but now with no damage being done to them. Bring the hood back up into position, clip the seals back in place and close the latches, that's it, absolute simplicity, but highly effective and takes no more time than time saved jumping up and down pushing on the hood in order to close the cover.

The other benefit of this style is it looks fantastically neat and tidy, no messy burst join in the middle (another source of leaking) and the finish right the way round the hood and down the A pillars is brilliantly clean and smooth, the transformation all of these seals make to the car really has to be seen for real, pictures will give you an idea but standing beside it is really the only place you can fully appreciate it.

Of course the number one priority with seals is waterproofing, and this setup now is about as good as I can get it, the hose test showed no ingress at all anywhere. This is the setup I will be using from now on, I wouldn't go back to the separate seals .

Image
Its certainly different.

Image
Once the glass is tucked up into these its as watertight as any modern convertible.

Image
The usual scenario at the bottom, fit for the bin. ;-)

I am also interested in this seal. How does it work with folding of the hood?

Hi Jamie, the one piece seal certainly looks the part, and I imagine the smoothness also eliminates wind noise which I sometimes get from my join.
You will need to post some more detailed photos , I’d like to se how it fixes onto the frame and tight to the b post and header seals, looks like a great mod.

If i am reading it right you remove the intermediate and forward seal which clips into place and is one seal no joints when you fold the hood down and when you lift the hood up you refit the seal again it clips into place before fixing the hood down. Pure genius in it's simplicity.

And Nicola Sturgeon won't renew his passport :( He is stuck in the toxic metropolis of Rawshyte in the Kingdom of Fife forever

If only he had developed this seal earlier I could have modelled the prototype and bought it down with me :(

I only have 2 sets of these at the moment, the ones I am using and the other for my relatives Elan. I should be able to do a small amount
but its the time factor and these ones take a fair bit of that. The other thing to note is that these seals are matched to the one piece Header / A pillar
seals and wont work if you have an OEM Header seal (it has the 2 side seals attached to it). I will update this thread if any become available, but hopefully
it might inspire anyone who would like to replicate the idea as it works exceptionally well, think of it this way, its only an Intermediate and a forward seal without the joint.

Hi Jamie, it was good to meet up with you yesterday and have a look at your new seal design, what a great idea and certainly looks better than the 2 piece intermediate seals. Also the fact that as these get easily removed before putting the hood down eliminates getting the ends damaged like the original design. And seconds to fit back together. 10/10 for this design .
Also better aerodynamically as mine sometimes whistles when going fast with the hood up, my current solution for that is to go fast with the hood down :-D

Hi Jamie

I've been reading the seal posts avidly having just bought a tidy but leaky SE. I need to fix a poorly set up hood frame first, but once I have I really need all new seals. I'd buy them, but would prefer to make the new one piece items. How do I start!? :-)

Hi Jamie,

I'm with djwazza68, in that I've just got a nice but leaky SE that needs not only a new hood but sorting the seals seems the way to go.

Are you considering a for a consideration going into a batch run?
