Clemo and I did the route this afternoon in the pouring rain (so at least I don't have to wash it). It is a lot prettier than than the direct route via the A350 and is predominantly left hand turns but is quite narrow in places so please be careful.

In anticipation of being split up by the traffic lights on the M4 roundabout, we will pause just after the left hand turn off the A350 (circled blue). It would help if the last person were to flash their lights and everyone relayed the flash to the front of the queue.
After ~2 miles, there is a left hand turn onto the Grittleton-Hullavington road.
After ~3 miles, there is a crossing over the B4039 at the Salutation. The B4039 is the road into Castle Combe (which has a right hand turn) so be careful of fast moving traffic, particularly from the right. Watch out for the cat.
After ~2½ miles of narrow roads, there is a gentle left hand fork towards North Wraxall. Watch out for the cat.
After ~½ mile of narrow roads there is a left hand turn in North Wrachall
After ~½ mile of narrow roads there is a left hand turn onto the A420. Visibility to the right is good.
After ~4 miles there is a left hand turn towards Tiddleywink. Castle Combe circuit is signposted in brown.
After ~2½ miles there is a left hand turn into Castle Combe main entrance (blue gate). Ignore the skid pan (green gate) and there is a brown signpost for "Competitors entrance" at 100 yards.

I love the instruction to flash head lamps.

The thought of assembling 30 cars with working headlamps, must be a record in its self :-D

It was quite funny. Entertaining having 30 all driving down single lane country roads in colour coordinated order! Heard some funny comments from cyclists and disgruntled drivers coming the other way waiting for us all to pass lol

Gents,
Thank you for organising a nice scenic route for us. Nice to see some countryside and villages and much more fun than driving straight there.

Apparently the convoy was 44 Elans and I'm glad that people enjoyed the scenic route, even though the roads were a bit narrow and rough at times.

I did wonder whether to play safe and go the main roads but we would have been fragmented by the time we'd gone through the two right handers. If anyone has any more photos, please post them here or on LEC-fb.

PS If you are the driver of the mega-tractor and trailer that I spoke to just outside North Wraxall, sincerest apologies - at least I warned you that there were 40+ more coming and you must admit, it was a pretty impressive sight and one you're not likely to see again… for at least a year.

We must work on this before next year. A video of a Mexican wave of headlights would be priceless. I wonder if there is a Guinness world record to be had?

It seems as though there were definitely some lessons to be learned from this particular convoy. Or maybe some "what went wells" and "even better ifs"...

It was really good that people were happy to take on board the idea of turning their cars round so that everyone wasn't trying to reverse out of parking spaces at the same time. It made for better pics of the car park at the services too! And everyone was very good-natured about being shepherded, which helped.

Amusingly, as the last car left the services car park I found I had a stack of maps in my hand. I'd been so busy frantically waving people about that I'd forgotten to dish out virtually ANY of the maps!!!

My initial relief at having got everyone out of the car park without directing anyone to crash into each other (although there WERE a couple of near misses - sorry about that! ) soon turned to horror when I saw the country lane just the other side of the M4; and it was rammed with stationary Elans.

Not only that but a 4x4 was visible part-way up the line, so the people at the front were waiting for a signal from behind, that would struggle to get past the, er, blockage! :?
In conclusion the idea of flashing headlamps (which was dropped onto me) was a great one in theory, but in practise it fell at the first hurdle.

There wasn't much I could do about that - my brief had simply been to start the convoy off; I wasn't supposed to be participating in it after that, because that was when I was supposed to be going back to the hotel to pick up MJK and Barrie. So I carried on up the road. Moments later I happened upon a purple Elan in a layby, whose driver was frantically consulting his map. He was totally gobsmacked when this random bloke in a Jag pulled up next to him and said (in a slightly Terminator-esque way) "come with me if you want to find the convoy"!

Luckily by the time I got the purple Elan caught up, the line was moving. That is, all except for the Steel Blue Elan with the CTS problem - although we hadn't worked out what his problem was at that point.

I was sure that it was a problem that wouldn't cause lasting damage to the car, and if he could just get closer to the circuit then we'd be able to diagnose and rectify the problem. So he limped off, and I went back to my task in hand, having left him with my mobile number.

Around the time I got back to the hotel, the chap with the Steel Blue Elan texted me to say he'd made it there and was parked up. In fact I believe he beat the main convoy!

And by the time MJK, Barrie and I arrived (thanks to a magical mystery tour courtesy of my sat nav), the rest of the convoy had just parked up. Apparently getting off the road and onto site was a bit of an issue, but again I couldn't help there due to being elsewhere.

There were no accidents, and other than the odd grey hair I don't think anyone suffered any lasting damage.
Clemo later told me that 2 Elans didn't make it, but I don't know any more details. Anyone...?

Neil , the 2 cars that didn't make it were not because of the convoy . They had problems in the week so made it in via different transport .

Did anyone spot the LEC stickers next to arrowed road signs. There were some out there .

From where i stood at Castle Combe everyone turned up and pretty much together. Colour convoy was still pretty much together as well .So well done to Neil thats 2 out of 2 for successful convoys over the last decade . Nice one mate . Now about the next one . We were thinking of ......

  I was next to a purple, yellow, steel blue and a Pacific blue in parc fermé

Incidentally, when it was time to go I was parked behind Phiilpe's car. His son (?) was in the driving seat and he took off fractionally after me and into my path. Luckily my reaction times are still quick and a crisis was averted

That was part of the plan and was printed on the instructions:

"In anticipation of being split up by the traffic lights on the M4 roundabout, we will pause just after the left hand turn off the A350 (circled blue). It would help if the last person were to flash their lights and everyone relayed the flash to the front of the queue."

I parked by my designated telegraph pole which was 250m from the junction which gave an unobstructed view for 150m+ and was sufficient to be able to see 30 Elans and I was waiting with my camera to video the Mexican flash. I could see past the 4X4, but unfortunately I couldn't see the 44th car and nobody appeared to flash so I decided to set off. I had intended to have Chris as a tail-end-Charlie with phone channel open but given the numbers, I sent him to Combe to help Clemo with the marshalling. Hopefully there wasn't anyone stuck out into the main road.

Enright wrote:… Apparently getting off the road and onto site was a bit of an issue, but again I couldn't help there due to being elsewhere.…

It always was going to be, especially if we had come in from the opposite direction and needed to turn right, which was why the route ended up being a series of left hand turns. We ended up with a traffic jam on the road but that was cleared by getting the queue waiting to turn right into the front paddock road then stacking the alternating greens/yellows into two lines of green and yellow.

Given the numbers were nearly 50% higher than anticipated and we were travelling down some pretty narrow lanes, I thought it all went remarkably well.
