Fitting a Sat Nav

A few pictures showing the fit of a Sat Nav in the Ash tray slot. Constructed from a B & Q (flat pack cantilever type) hinge with its overcenter spring removed, mounted with 1mm fibreglass plates which attach to the ashtray cavity and back of the sat nav with Velcro. A 3D printed support for a magnet firmly holds the assembly shut in place of the original hinge spring which was a bit too strong. The only permanent mod to the ashtray cavity is a drilled hole to pass the usb cable through. Keeps the sat nav as close to the dash as possible, just out of the way of gear changes. The hinge action allows the power button on the top edge to be accessed. Can easily be removed via the velcro and the ashtray refitted whenever necessary. Done a fair few miles now - Castle Combe and Spain, with nothing causing it to fall open, the hinge holds itself back when vertical, bolstered by the magnets.

Ive got a flip up but cant get new maps so not ideal.

Nice lateral thinking and use of the cabinet hinge. Looks like you’ve got a similar Garmin to mine, but I just used the standard mount which works well as shown here.

Something I found worthwhile was getting a non-reflective film for the screen - helps immensely on sunny days

I need to get round to drilling a hole for the power cable!

My sat nav (Garmin like yours) just jams in the fag place. Only falls out when I go over potholes

Mine is in the same location, but being a smaller Garmin unit, fits totally inside the ashtray hole (I used the plastic 'bubble' thing that it arrived in as a base for a fibreglass mold to hold it securely).....

..... unfortunately it is now so old that it is starting to play up a bit, and it isn't easy to find a new one small enough to fit the same hole, so it doesn't get used.

My Garmin is 14 x 8.5 cm and with the attachment (less the gimble thing that sticks on the screen) it just jams/wedges in the ashtray hole. I let the lead dangle and just use the fag lighter fir power.

Nothing sophisticated but it means I can simply move my satnav from M100 to van to M100 very easily. I must admit though that Ken's idea is much smarter and a touch more sophisticated

I fitted a single DIN stereo with sat nav included and it has a 7" screen which flips out and up at the press of a button. OK so it partially blocks the air vents when up, but at least I have a big screen I can read!

And I have the benefit of Bluetooth and flash drive music too.

My TomTom is too old to take the new maps - bastards! So I use a phone with wego.here.com, stuck on a magnetic butt-plug rammed into the air vent.
