Whilst I remember it taking a bit of time to get used to the short shift in my car, it wasn't too bad at all (but i actually prefer the length of 'shift' without the short-shift!).... that said, I have always done '3-second gearchanges' unless in an absolute hurry, so it has always been a precise process......

As far as the sill plates go, they are a 2-piece fitting....... the lower plate is attached to the sill with a number of fir-tree fasteners, and then the top (shaped/molded) piece is attached tot he lower plate with double-sided tape.

I have managed to remove them previously by carefully levering them up and out of the holes using a plastic pry bar, and then seperate the parts when it's on the bench.

My carpets just slid out from underneath the sills. I had to remove the fuse box cover, seat and loosen a number of the b pillar fixings and I think loosen the centre console too but not 100% sure on the centre console

I can still do a lazy flick into 3rd. 2nd seems to need more effort. Be interesting to hear whether yours is the same Jonathan, I could see any adjustment for 2nd gear specifically in JCs instructions and not asked him yet - just seeing if I get used to it first

I have the OEM longshift on my black one and have absolutely no problems. I too pause a bit on gearshift unless I really need to push on

I inherited Dave's shortshift and an anodised knob on the yellow one and it did initially take some getting used to. The gate appeared much narrower and the gearstick almost required punching into position. Occasionally I found myself going from 1st to 4th Once you get used to being more positive and punching it into place, particularly 2nd, it becomes more enjoyable. I think Justin will find he gets used to it after an extended period of spirited driving

I was taught on the 1977 version, and that is the one I can still recite (having also instructed with it)...... whilst I was at Devizes regional driving school they bought out the 'new' version in 1994, and all the instructors were getting grief for using the wrong definitions

It didn't actually change a lot, but I still operate under the 7-point system of car control.

I have never even seen or read the newest versions......

.... processes may change, (and technology), but physics stays the same.

. Completely. When I was advanced civilian instructing, 7-step Roadcrsft was the Bible, and then they tried to mess it up with lots of new-fangled additions and complications. At which point I’m afraid I said “Thanks, but I’ll pass”.

As you say, the physics doesn’t change.

So Jonathan, do you have them fitted now? How are you finding them?

I was previously (and only recently) struggling to get mine into 5th gear without a crunch. The new cables seem to have resolved that

Not yet, Justin. As you know, it’s part of this year’s big work schedule. So far front end is dismantled, radiator is out (anyone want to buy a knackered OEM radiator?), radiator support, cross member, ARB and associated brackets are off with the wonderful Kim for stripping, blasting and powder coating.

While we’re waiting for them, we’ll probably do the cam belt etc, and I’ll derust and paint the front bumper grilles. Then we’ll fit the gear cables, new coils/leads and header tank (all in the same general area, and replace all the hoses with the Samco ones I bought last year. Final job will be to reassemble the front end with the new Coolex radiator.

Good to see the dash plaque number matches the tub number!

Car update:

One week before lockdown I took it to Tim at Lakeside. He gave it a major service (belts etc), MOT and fitted the shortshift I bought from BCN. When I arrived to pick the car up Tim had the car up on the lift to show me a few differences he had spotted between mine and others and I took the opportunity to inspect the underside. I spotted some surface rust on the chassis and wishbones. So yesterday I worked on the rear underside, removed rust and treated. Going to do the front today or over the weekend

I decided to clean out the water drainage pipe from the underside this time. The drainage which runs from next to the fuel cap. I'm not sure whether the pipe is running down in the right place. It is in amongst the fuel hoses. The open end of the drainage pipe is quite high, level with the top of the fuel tank - I couldn't possibly touch it with my fingers. Is that the right place for it? I've heard of others blowing air in the pipe from below which I couldn't possibly do in its current poition. I'm wondering whether it got put back incorrectly when I had the fuel tank replaced a few years ago.

When I pour water into the recess the water sits there for a time before dropping through.
