The blue square bit goes into the hole in the bonnet, yes? With the open end facing toward the inner part of the engine bay I assume.
No, the red part gets pulled out enough to make the blue part fit into the hole and then the red part gets pushed thru the blue part to spread it so it stays in the hole and gets out of the way of the rod. The direction you describe is correct
The plate I was talking about with the missing piece circled in yellow seems to be where the bonnet prop should be mounted to the bonnet, whereas mine is just sitting loose in the engine bay.

Thanks for all your help, the exploded diagrams are a bit confusing when things were never right since I had the car.
