removal of glove box

I need to know how to remove the glovebox?

I have undone the clips and it has dropped free. Do not see how you extract the long bar from the fittings at either end without damaging something.

Please help?

Mine doesn't have a 'long fitting!'

It just has little pins at either side that have spring-clips on them. Once removed, the pins drop out (and get lost) and the glove-box drops off.

I have no experience of removal, but I believe there are 2 types - on with the long thing and one without.

What can I say Gary?- mines a long one. Don't get too excited!!

Try as I might, I cannot shift the bastard to remove it, and yes, I have removed the two split pins that retain it.

Having removed the two pins and washers, slide the rod to the right until it clears of the hole on the left, then lower the left side of the box slightly in order to slide the rod to the left, and out.

Hi Ray, Thanx for that. I have already tried to slide the rod to the right but it is hitting something which prevents it from travelling far enuff. In view of what you say I'll try that again or see if I can move what is blocking its movement. Just didnt want to force my rod anywhere it shouldnt go.

Hi Paul- check 4 posts up.

Have removed the split pins at both ends- no washers there- the rod will slide in both directions and into the metal bush that is fixed to the dash, but it will not move enough to free it.

Dave,
There are no permanent fixings in the way of the rod moving from side to side. Try using a mirror to see what’s happening. It is possible something may have been put there at a later date, extra wiring, alarm, etc. or the rod has a step worn in it.

There would be a tendency to make two short rods having bent the original, or to replace it with two bolts, but the rod when fitted and spaced properly is helping to hold the dashboard together.

The holes are sometimes slotted in the box where the nylon bushes pass through. Having identified where the bush needs to be, fix them in position with cataloy. Another good trick, in the interest of getting rid of a potential rattle, is to replace the twelve washers with two single spacers, or re-drill the rod.

Having had the same problem as DaveT with the later style glovebox and the answer is to remove the R clips at both ends then use mole grips to first twist the bar to release it and then move it from side to side. Eventually both ends can be removed one after the other.
