I trial fitted the front bumper before Sikaflexing the grills into it ready for its final fitting. While the Sikaflex was curing I fitted both clam headlamp infill panels with stainless steel M6 bolts coated with copper slip to prevent the new aluminium M6 Jacknut inserts reacting and seizing the bolts in place should they need to be removed at any time. I have done the same with all fittings where possible. I then fitted the headlamp pods and set up the panel gaps. I bought some black stainless steel M6 bolts and Washers to finish the fitting of the headlamp pod hinge brackets properly. (Images are in reverse order) :banghead:

Surprisingly fitting the metal intake pipe from the intercooler through the clam to the engine intake proved quite tricky to make sure it would not rub on the intercooler pod or the aperture it goes through the clam into the engine bay much swearing, pushing, pulling then loosening and restarting the whole process to get it just right.

I am awaiting a few parts to complete the front so I moved to the rear of the car and fitted the badges. It’s really starting to look like a new car

Here is a quiz to test Elan anatomy skills. Which area is this a photo of?

If not
2 SE wheels
3 you have second thoughts about the fed wheels otherwise you wouldn't be asking.

You are putting so much effort into this project that you have to love it, so chose which you like the most.

I don't have the S2 wheels unfortunately. So its either the original SE wheels that are original to this car or the Fed wheels. I know Jamie was dead set on the fed wheels. I am really not sure :bonk:

Get the original 15" SE wheels from your brother and use for show purposes and originality. Use the Fed ones for normal running

Best of both worlds

That sounds like a good idea.

Its a Cooper S D 2 litre diesel its excellent fun :D The hood doesn't leak  Great fuel economy too.

Handles well goes like a train with mountains of torque. Sport button is extra fun

The the ride is quite stiff but I don't mind that. It puts a smile on your face doesn't have ride and handling of the Elan. Excellent all around little sporty car. We had a Cooper S D hatch before the convertible.

I have not done anything to JUFs for a couple of weeks now due to waiting for parts and weather constraints. So I started looking at under bonnet labels and under bonnet sound deadening.

Having asked a labelling company about reproducing them obviously the answer was how many etc. it all became rather expensive at £3>£500 depending on art work and volume ordered. So I managed to salvage the ones not still available off a spare clam I have and ordered the rest new from SJ Sports Cars. :)

I then started looking at sound deadening. Having taken some advice off another thread on this site I contacted Classic9Leather shop.
The Classic9leather shop product although I am sure is excellent it is cost prohibitive to buy and have shipped to the UK as I recall approx £150 that's without any taxes
Most suppliers in the UK can supply various thicknesses of fire retardant foam with or without foil backing. The problem is to make it as original as possible the foil should have the self adhesive glue on it to be glued to the bonnet with the black foam side facing the engine. The manufacturers now all seem to do it the other way around now self adhesive on the foam leaving the foil face towards the engine.

However I have found a supplier of O class fire retardant foam 12 mm thick with the foil backing he is prepared to manufacture with the glue on the foil. I have my old sound deadening as a template I am just awaiting the sample to check it is as per original spec before ordering some. Would anyone else be interested in this if this turns out to be like the original spec?

Cheers Mike

Mike,

If it's any help I re-created all the underbonet labels a few years ago...... if nothing else, the artwork is correct, and you can get them printed by a 'local' graphics place if they are better than what you already have.....

Hi Dave,

Thanks again I have your recreated file saved which you mentioned early on this thread.

I asked the company to see how much this affected the price and was trying to see if I could get multiple sets so the LEC community could by a full under bonnet set. We looked at printing all the white backed labels pre-cut from an A4 sheet. It would be worth while if 100 sets could be sold. In the end I took the easy option realising the labels that are not available I had on my spare clam it was easier as I still have other part sourcing issues to solve such as a section of wiring loom for the A panel indicator and Red carpet.

Yesterday I received an E mail from Firth carpets having had a good look at the sample I sent them.

They have stated they can exactly recreate the original Red carpet in non moulded form at their factory in Italy see their response below.

Yes we are able to produce your carpet to the same colour and finish.

There would be a minimum production requirement of 240sqm.

It can be produced at either 1.00m or 2.00m width

Price will be 14.90Euros/sqm ex-works Italy

That's approx £3225.00 before shipping and tax I presume
I don't think there are enough Elan owners in the world interested in changing their carpets to red or replacing old carpets that would make this a viable option

Well haven't touched JUFs for a while however I have just received a parts delivery from SJ and also I have have sourced some original spec under bonnet sound deadening.
The company dont normally produce it the way it is on the Elan but will do specials for Elan owners. It is 12 mm thick O class foam with foil backing and importantly they will put the self adhesive on the foil for Elan owners and have produced a specific product code for Elans you do have to cut it to shape yourself but their min order quality means you have loads spare to practice on possibly enough to do 2 bonnets. I have listed their details below.

The company is called:-

A.G.S Acoustic Materials Ltd in Leicestershire Call Richard he was extremely helpful. tel 01664 411770

The product code is N12/SA/FF/AG-LAM. :D

Similar products have been made for the Elan. You may want to check here and here to see if these are suitable.
