Occasionally I cannot open the door from outside the car, bur the interior release handle works. Has anyone experienced this before please?

Yes, I had the same. If you remove the red clip and the locking button and refit it, but make sure that the metal ribbed plunger is as high as possible before putting the locking button and the red clip back on, that should solve the issue. The ribbed plunger can drop slightly or be knocked down when putting the locking button on so watch out for that.
Cheers

Thanks, I don't have the lock plunger fitted at all at the moment, the doors are stripped.

It would explain why, latterly, Stevo had the doors propped shut with lengths of 4 x 2

Have you tried putting the key into the lock and 'opening' the lock and then using the outer door lever to open the door? The weight of the rods can cause the exterior door lever to disengage. If that works you could tape the rod in situ until you reassemble as I assume you are not locking the car at any time? if you are, then simply resecure the rod afterwards.
It may not work, but it's a solution I found for my car.

Clearly no key hole on the passenger side!
But maybe it is not functioning because the pass. door is actually locked. And the position of the rods is preventing it unlocking.

Just looking at my car I have a keyhole on pass. side.
Maybe your lacking one is part of the problem.

Stevo delocked her. I can pop my finger inside the door & flip the catch no problems, it almost feels like the external release doesn't have sufficient travel, it definitely doesn't pull as far as the internal release.

I see; Mark's prototype piece of wood is bigger than my prototype piece of wood. I know which one is the lightweight racing version though unless Mark's one is made of carbon fibre.....
I do recall from a factory tour in the late 90's that the Esprit has a complete., full width, plywood section fabricated behind the seats into which the speakers are fitted....
