Gear lever and handbrake gaiters

My understanding from studying the wealth of info here is that the gear lever gaiter is the same on the SE and S2 but that the handbrake gaiters are different. I have a S2.

So far as the gear lever one is concerned I have found reference to the wire hem being clipped into clips under the lip of the centre console, but I have no such clips. Did the S2 have clips? Other than glue I cannot see a way of holding the base of the gaiter in place.

So far as the handbrake gaiter is concerned, the S2 has a plastic piece to which the leather is glued (and not the wire which the SE has). My question is how that edge is held to the centre console? Mine has a cable tie at the rear end, but apart from that, the gaiter just flaps about. Is the leather face of the plastic hem glued to the console and/or clipped as well? To do the job properly the console will have to come out, which is not a big deal.

I bought a replacement handbrake gaiter from ebay which was advertised for M100 cars 1989-1996, but it turned out to be suitable only for the SE.

I Will take a couple of pictures of mine and post later.

Mine is a SE and i know the S2 console has a different design (window controllers in the front middle, by the sides of the mirror instead of the sides) so, theres a possibility the whole way to attache the fabric is different, But im hoping with some pictures of the SE you at least get a starting point to investigate from

I have an S2 as well, and I’ve previously replaced both gaiters.

The gear lever gaiter on mine has a stiff wire running around the base of the leather. There’s a rolled metal recess at the front and rear of the base of the gear lever. I managed to finagle the wire into the recess with the help of a couple of plastic trim tools, but it’s a right faff.

As you say, the handbrake gaiter is glued to the plastic strip and, on mine at least, the strip is fixed to the plastic console with 8 or 9 knock on edge clips like these.

Does this look right? I wonder if the gold piece is upside down or back to front. The curved part is at the bottom for no good reason that I can see.

My SE has that as well. but from memory, its not shiny silver color, I Think mine had been painted black

Hello, I need to replace the hand brake cover on the S2; which over the 28 years, is looking a bit worse for wear! ( the leather has worn through on the left side!). Is there a supplier around that makes the hand brake cover and one for the gear stick also? Preferably in Grey, (Raven, I believe). Many thanks for any leads! Oh, also, how to remove those two pesky pop rivets at the front of console? Cheers from Clive.

Hi Clive, I got mine from eBay. It’s a long time ago, but they were like these ones. These are black, but I guess they might do dark grey if you asked nicely. Alternatively, I would think a decent local trimmer would be able to run something up for you fairly cheaply - Aldridge in Birmingham would be worth a call.

Jonathan, thankyou for the lead on the hand brake lever and gear stick gaiters. I have emailed The-tuning-shop-team and asked if they can do them in Grey leather, (Raven), I believe was Lotus' name for the S2 leather interior. I await a reply from them! Priced at £ 28.99p; I would say that is GVFM. Cheers from Clive.

I had mine made up at Allon White and they did a great job.
