Door insert trims

May i ask for more help please?

I have removed the leather door trim inserts for recovering. They were a pig to get out, having been glued in place. In fact both broke but I have repaired them with epoxy.

At the door lock end the trim is retained by a chunky pin located in an elongated hole which fits into a female bush in the door card. It is the other end which confuses me.

The door hinge end seems to tuck under the internal grab handle, but what holds it in place? A bit of double sided tape might do it, or is it just the pin that does all the work?

I am not referring to the door card but to the piece of trim covered with leather which fits in a recess in the door card next to the internal door handle. In the first video it is the very first thing to be removed which seems just to lift out. Mine has a pin which is at the other end to the one shown in the video. Mine is s2 in case that makes a difference.

The trick is that you should slide the card foreward a little, then you can pry it from the rear (and pulling the plug)
If you dont move it foreward a little it is very hard to get it out of the recess / edges.

I've always thought they were the door cards? Well, that's what I've always called them anyway

I think the term door card refers to the entire internal trim piece that typiclly clips to the metal door Mark. John was talking about just a small (maybe 1/3) section of it.

I have nothing of great interest to tell the OP, but with the latest load of posts being so pedantic about what to call stuff, I felt left out with no involvement

Actually, I have something which may be of interest to OP.....

.... the door inserts in mine were really poor when I got the car (broken into 3 pieces internally) - and were held in with double-sided tape and a dollop of butyl rubber goo.

I tried to reinforce them with glassfibre matting and resin to the rear, and they then stayed in place a lot better. Then when I had the car painted, one got lost anyway.

I ended up making myself a pair of new ones by lining the door cards (or, as it now appears that they're called, door trim panel assemblies) with clingfilm, and using them as a mould for a new fibreglass trim pieces. I made them from a double layer of matting and covered them with a thin foam sheet and alcantara material (once they had cured and been trimmed down neatly).

Because they were an 'exact fit' I don't need to use anything to hold them in place, they haven't fallen out in the last 8 years.

Yes John. All e-inserts this year as per normal as I'm saving the planet I gave up on actual Xmas cards and the post office about 10 years ago now.

Having retrimmed an SE and a S2 I now understand the way the leather inserts are constructed.

All models start with plastic insert which fits into the moulding of the door card.

With S2 cars that plastic piece has a pin in the doorlock end which locates into a female bush in the door card. For removal the whole infill is moved backwards whereupon the pin can be prised out.

With SE cars there is no pin. The infill seems to be held in by the grooves in the edge of the reveal. This leads to many infills being retained by some sort of glue/double sided tape.

This is where it gets interesting. If the leather is of the type where there is a coloured piece to match the seats, the leather will be four pieces sewn together. To accommodate those seams and allow the leather to lie flat, the plastc has groves cut in it . The grooves have 6mm holes at either end of each seam and the bit bwtween the holes has been removed into which the seam fits. The problem with this is that the plastic is very weak at the hole ends where very little plastic is left. It looks almost inevitable that the plastic will break on removal into 3 or 4 pieces.

I have repaired my broken parts with epoxy but the whole thing must be handled very carefully. I suspect that any form of adhesive to hold the infill in place will inevitably lead to breakage on removal.

its worth noting that on the SE
the "handle inserts" are different depending on your interior trim
on my blue car the leather interior have a 3 piece insert as per Dave's post which in my experience also had butyl and tape holding the 3 parts together,
however in my yellow car, the cloth interior version was a single piece of backing, which by the way it feels, i dont think its fibreglass. (not rigid enough)
