Heater fan

I was out in the car a couple of days ago (cold but dry so roof down) when there was a loud screeching from the heater fan.

Research on here said it might well be a nest in the cage and that the motor was reasonably easy to remove.

So today, out came the glove box which was fiddly but not difficult. My s2 has the long bar version which wiggles in each direction to remove.

The motor is then visible on a gold anodised plate held by three screws. Home and dry I thought.

With the screws out the plate moves but it will not come forward as there is a very large loom in the way which goes down to the fuse box. The loom is in a very rigid conduit which is difficult to manipulate.

The fuse box is held by a single screw so that came out but still there is not enough room to get the loom out of the way to get the motor and fan out.

The light (and my enthusiasm) has dwindled so I shall try better tomorrow.

I did not remove the seat. Access is not that bad; the problem is moving the loom out of the way. It may be easier in an SE.

Interestingly, in my LHD federal car, I did not need to fully remove the glovebox (from what I remember) and there wasn't a loom in a way.

I managed to get the cage out and back in. It is a real struggle because of all the wires in the way. In the end I did remove the seat to get better access. I took the opportunity to check the metal at the base of the B post. All well. No mouse nest in the cage but an assortment of twigs. I tested the motor with 12v and it ran sweetly.

I also took out the vent at the left hand end of the dash. Not difficult and helps access to the motor plate screws. Someone had been in there before and the vent was held in by gaffer tape so I have remedied that as well.

All good fun.

Hi John

Have you made progress with the carpet templates? I removed my carpets with the intention of doing the same. Unfortunately, I was struck down with Covid back in 2020, which left me permanently disabled. Trying to spruce up the interior so I'd be interested to know if you get the templates done as I'm aware that companies such as Coverdale can make up a complete set of interior carpeting.

I have the same.. blower on bits of nest fly out. Is it a wasps nest? Because that's the only thing that can get in there surely?...

Anyway looks like I've got to remove my fan too..
