Driveshaft inner CV tripod replacements

Postby RonR » Sat 05.12.2020, 15:23

The driveshaft rebuild continues...
Just found a replacement tripod for the inner CV joints - It's a GI69 tripod with 30 splines - GKN have a "motorsport" version listed as part number MS3H002. I've ordered one, trial fitted it and - it fits on the N/S (L/H) shaft. Don't see why they would have used a different one on the O/S but I'll be trying it in the next few days and will report back here.

great find Ron, could you also check if they can supply the correct inner boot/gator? as the inner one is always the hardest to source (at least it is here!)

I asked last year and they didn't have an alternative, no harm in asking again though. The generic inner boot that I found didn't have enough clearance.

If you ever need an inner CV boot buy the Shaftec BK40, they are a perfect fit.

Do the Shaftec BK40 boots accommodate the big nylon washer thing that protects the boot from the tripod?

Yes Steve, I've just fitted my O/S one and can confirm the GKN MS3H002 tripods fit both sides.

im in the position of needing also to make this repair in my NA

after asking on facebook and having pinky pointing me in this direction and highlihgitng the race parts website (and purchasing the recomended part) i started thinking this looks like something that we should be able to get from a "non-motorsport" supplier.

after 2 hours googling about. and a few dead ends (lola cars did not use these in their driveshafts) i came across a off comment on a renault 4 forum that GKN GI69 were comon in relault driveshafts.
10 minutes later looking for renault 4 driveshaft tripods on ebay i came across something that seems promising.

renault part number 7700107912 (for the kangoo and clio) has 30 teeth and roller diameter of 29.9mm (raceparts states the GKN has 29.95mm and my bearing was measured 29.83mm)
at a wopping £18.89 per unit + £8.65 delivery. i ordered 2 from bestpartstore.co.uk (which happens to be just another front for autodoc) with the "return is on us" option ticked for an extra £4

hopefully this wont take long to arrive and i can report back if this is a viable alternative at less than half the price previously known :-)

Your thoughts are appreciated

I'm tempted to run the car with it, but I'm going to ask my local propshaft specialist for their opinion as well.

I think the radius of the rollers is not the same either? (I mean the small radius of the "tore"), not the overall radius

propshaft specialist had a look. and in he's words

"this is the right part. but its not of a standard of quality i would fit"

hes main consern was the rollers clearances allow them to "twist" and they catch on themselfs causing extra wear.
this appears to be is a mixture of poor quality roller clearances together with the fact the bearing is 10mm thick instead of 12mm as the one that came out of the car (and the replacement GI69 from raceparts)

i will be returning these and enquire about the bearing dimentions of the other brands who make tripods for the same vehicle driveshafts.

we may come to an end where the price is the same. but at least the knowledge of an alternative will be available

I have finally received my refund from Autodoc for the tripod hubs i returned and i am now contacting directly the manufacturers of the hubs that are listed for this car.

I Have further investigated and found that the renault kangoo i was using for the search is a vehicle with about 80hp on the highest engine output.
further investigation lead me to find that the Clio II Hatchback 3.0 V6 Sport has a power output higher than the elan. and a recorded maximum torque closer to the elan's spec (159 lb/ft clio vs 148 lb/ft elan) while using the same OEM part code
if you search bestparts store for hubs for this specific car. they do not list the part i purchased previously. althought the "pascal G4R004PC" is available for both.
I have also found LCC "LCCF02190" listed for the same car

Emailed 3 different manufactorers that makes hubs that are listed as Xreference for the clio today and will be awaiting to see what kind of customer service they provide.

ideally i will be hearing back from them. as the alternative is to buy a pair from each out of whoever is the best distributor in order to find the right part.

first reply was the tipical run of the mill "give us your car name or part number"

Hello,

I’m sorry to inform you that we do not have any dimensions on hand for this part. However, if you can provide me with the OEM part number of the part you need, I’ll be able to find the perfect match for your vehicle if we have it. You can get this OEM part number by calling your dealership and provide them with your VIN number. Ask them for the full OEM part number for the part you need. Let me know this number and I’ll be able to take care of you if we carry the specific part.

i replied explainign that there's no information about part numbers for a 1991 lotus elan. and i have spent more than 13 hours already researching in order to ask them if the clio v6 part dimnetions match.

Joao,

Can you give them the GKN part number and see if they can supply it (or one to the same specifications)?

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

i did include in my reply the gkn part number and asked if their unit was a cross reference to it. :-)

as a final note for this.

long story short.

the renault clio 02 from 2002 v6 3.0 has the same driveshaft profile but a LOT more torque. so i ordered from autodoc the tripod bearings for that car, and althought i cannot make the claim they are a "perfect" match, they certainly are 99% there.
they fit and the roller clearances seem correct and the bearings are 12mm thick instead of the 10mm that the kangoo part was.

i have fitted one in my driver's side as part of other work on the jackshaft (basically i swapped the tripod and bearing to confirm that the shaft itself is worn) and will be driving with that for whatever long it takes, i am pretty confident this is a suitable replacement.

i ordered from https://www.bestpartstore.co.uk (which is another front for autodoc)
part number is "49-2035" maxgear
i also ordered a pascal one which seems exactly the same. but a little more pricy and i would fit it with equal confidence. part number is "G4R004PC"

its a bit strange but at the moment of posting this, the maxgear hub is no longer marked as a cross reference to the clio, but the pascal one is.

They were not a tight fit by design - What do you think is worn?

Are you on facebook ? I have the video there which i shared with a friend. i can forward you the video.

basically i held the shaft in the vice and tried to twist the cup. and it moves and makes a clunky noise.
I guess i can separate the 2 again and pack the cup with grease maybe ?
