Based on the overlaps measured by both Dave & Dimitris the pads will indeed go right to the edge of the disc with no margin. But that's just right isn't it...?

I got the discs, and some Green-stuff pads, from
http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/. I went for the EBC turbo discs but they do Black Diamond, and probably others, as well.

I expect them to arrive over the next couple of days

I'll fit them when I can get access to the car lift

I'll report back (I hope joyfully) after the drive home!

It seems quite a good site and they do discounts for clubs. Maybe we should get onto them and propose a section for the Elan?

It was 16 pages but I edited some of my one-liners out a couple of weeks ago.
We're just sociable folks 'round these parts Alan.

I was going to do the same for other people's but it reflects in your postings total and I may have affected folk's status so I just trimmed mine.

At last I have some discs! It might take a while to get them fitted as I don't have access to the car lift for at least 2 weeks :-/

[smiley=bonk.gif] [smiley=censored.gif] [smiley=cussing.gif]
The 260mm Corsa disc isn't big enough, at least not with the green-stuff pads. The installation had a 3 or 4mm overlap

. The disc also needed shimmed as the i.d. of the bell was bigger on the Corsa disc by 3.5mm. The pads were mutilated to allow me to use the new callipers and discs anyway but its a bit of a bodge-up. I'll probably return to the Clio discs although Dave is hopeful that he might identify a different pad geometry to solve the problem - which would be better.

The new brakes do stop better, I gained some confidence with them on the back roads near home and they certainly bite. I get a nice buzz from the grooved discs as well.

Many thanks to Dave for the use of the lift and doing ALL the work!

Alan

Alan,
Glad the confidence improved on the way home

Checked the profile of your pads with mine and they are identical :o I think this now points to the calipers [smiley=banghead.gif]. Did you record the casting marks, parts numbers etc? If you can advise which car they were from I will cross check.

Ok from a photograph I can see the codes

FN52/24R & CN(?)978 (right caliper)

FN52/24L & CN977 (left caliper)

There's a longer code in smaller writing as well but I can't read it from the photo, I'll have to take the wheel off to read it.

Alan
On reflection I suppose its the carrier rather than the caliper that's important, the numbers above are taken from the caliper. Perhaps a trip to the scrappy to measure up the offset between the sliding pins and the mounting holes of the carriers from a few different Vauxhall ATE installations is in order. I still think they all should be the same, otherwise the Nova -> Astra/Cavalier/Calibra ATE 16v upgrade wouldn't work...

By the way the Clio disc solution also looks dubious. These discs have a 3mm greater offset from the mounting face to the rear surface of the disc. I thought this could be corrected by using 3mm spacers on the caliper, however, the disc would touch caliper mount on the hub carrier - there is very little clearance (around 1mm) with the standard discs. The disc could be shimmed by 3mm at the mounting face instead but this would offset the wheel outwards as well.

Mine have the same "FN" Nos but 971 (L/H) & 972 (R/H)
Also 361.1 (L/H) & 361.2 (R/H).
Looks like the carrier, do you recall which car they came from?
3 options?
1. Return to warm

Washington and try one of mine for size :-*
2. I have a template from my carriers. Offset looks to be approx 37mm. I can post a copy.
3. Spend a rather cold day at the local scrappy
If 1 fits then I will arrange an "exchange" for your butchered EBC's
Agree with your thoughts on the Clio option.

Hi,
I have not been on this site for quite a while,
I like the format.

Anyway - I have currently the GSI calipers
and Volkswagen G60 Discs on my Elan. The
Discs were lathed down from 280 to 270 ish
by a co-worker. Everything seems to be working fine.
My co-worker swore never to do the lathe-work
again - cast-iron is nasty stuff to work on.

I have no spacers - I used the standard bolts.
The whole lot fits within a 15" wheel.

The only worry I had was that the centre of the
disk was 4mm larger than the ring on the hub.
After 1000 miles the disk retaining screws have not
budged - so I take it they are under no strain - all
the energy being transmitted by the bolts.

If I had another go I would try the corsa? ones
first.

All my previous measurements regarding 2mm overhang were taken from the R/H caliper. This weekend I had reason to check the L/H side (Finally got around to Gearbox oil but that's another story ::)).
Horror, the overhang is 4mm

Looks like a tolerance issue.
Alan, this seems to support the findings from last year

I've fitted ATEs from a '96 Daewoo Nexia, with standard disks. The pads overhang 2mm (same at both sides).
Apart from the fact that you know this does'nt look quite right, can anyone give me a good technical reason why its not acceptable.
After all the brakes work much better than the standard items which is the whole point of the excercise.
