Getting glue off the plastic moldings

I have just bought a replacement B pillar moulding. It has the proper carpet but the carpet needs to be re attached to the plastic.

Can anyone recommend a method to remove the old glue from the plastic and which is the best glue to re attach the carpet piece?

There are a number of ways to remove the old glue - but, to be honest, if it is solid and stuck to the plastic, I wouldn't bother too much...... unless it affects the way the new carpet fits.

Anyway, I usually peel off the bigger globules with my fingers - just rubbing it tends to get it to form into strands which can be picked off...... or scraping it with an old chisel does work well.

It can be heated with a hairdryer (I have an old one in the garage, ..... it only became the old one when Angie asked if I'd seen hers, and then "we" bought a new one!!!!) which makes it easier to remove by friction.

You can use Acetone on a rag to chemically remove it, but go carefully so it doesn't affect the new plastic.... and use in a ventilated area.

If all else fails, a sanding disc in a drill or grinder will make it flat enough to attach the new carpet... or even hand-sanding with a wooden block. I tend to use a combination of all those methods, depending on the job.

I've not tried it, but petrol ,may well dissolve it..... but I wouldn't want the lingering smell in the car.

There is such a thing as evo-stick remover which might work, but I'd try some on the inside of the plastic first to be sure it won't melt it!
I got mine from a DIY store, can't remember which one but probably Screwfix or Toolstation, maybe B&Q???

depending on how much you care about the plastic that is hidden behind the carpet.

what i find works best is to remove carpet using the hair dryer (or heat gun in lower setting) and then use acetone (nail polish remover) to get the stuff out

I Have graduated from nail polish remover to acetone (a lot more concentrated) years ago when i found a 5l tin for sale at my local auto parts shop (fast car is very close to you in fact) for 20 odd quid

if acetone fails, you can step up the game to white spirit and if your very desperate paint thinner.

each step up is more risky to damage the plastic and your health, so, be mindfull when deciding what to do
