NLGL 3 Grease for Clutch Bearing

Postby simonbuk » Thu 02.10.2025, 19:43

Just about to put a new clutch bearing in and the manual says to use high temperature NLGL 3 spec grease. I'm having trouble finding it locally and quickly (I'm an impatient bugger).
I have some high temperature CV joint grease but that is NLGL 2 spec ?
Anybody know anything about greases ?! Is it imperative that i use NLGL 3 spec stuff ?!

Basically, the higher the number, the thicker the grease......

.... so NLGI 2 is thinner (more oily) than NLGI 3.

The grades work a bit like oil grades - although what you have is 'high temperature' it means that it will remain in spec at high temperature.... and it will be too thin for what you need, risking being thrown about and onto the clutch plate and cover.

Now, whether in the real world it would matter too much, I can't say - but if something is specified, I'd use it!

Whilst out getting some new oil cooler pipes made up i visited 5 different motor factors - none had it in stock :?

Can only seem to find it online so my long weekend of getting the box back in and progressing has stalled slightly :smt022

As you say, better to use the right stuff.............back to some decorating now I guess :-D

May be of use, or may not - but do you have a motorcycle mechanic nearby? Grade3 grease is often specified for off-road bike chains. It is annoying that you only need a smear of the stuff, and buying a 'standard' quantity will lead to it becoming a dust collector on the garage shelf.... until you throw it away and then 2 weeks later find a job that needs it!

I've just looked in my garage cupboard and I have 2 types of G3 - a thick silicone grease in a flat metal tin (brake callipers, window runners etc) and a 'standard' tin of Lithium stuff which I have had for probably about 40 years, such is the rarity of use!
