Lotus never made a hardtop for the Elan, but a couple of people produced aftermarket hardtops in very small numbers. This one was designed and made by Simon Carrier, a motorsport designer (Ford Focus WRC Chief Designer, Toyota Gazoo Racing WRC Chief Designer), often referred to as the SPC Hardtop after his company.

I bought it several years ago, and used it for a couple of winters while I drove my Elan daily. Included are two hook assemblies which bolt to the mounting points for the hood, and secure the rear of the hardtop to the car. Not included are the front clamps – you simply transfer the ones over from your hardtop when the hardtop is fitted.

Structurally, the hardtop is decent, but it needs a respray and a bit of fettling. The paint join between the black and the red parts of the roof in not great. Part of the red paint is crackled, and the near side edge has been touched up quite visibly. The seals are well used, and easily replaced when respraying the hood. The headlining has a few marks and a small area with some damage.

I live near Tunbridge Wells. The hardtop is too big and easy to damage to be shipped by courier, so it would need to be collected.

I paid about £2000 for the item about 10 years ago. I am hoping that it will still be worth that kind of amount. The item’s scarcity makes it difficult to ascertain a fair price for the item. A scarce item which I am sure will never make production again. Find another!
