Had the car on the Dyno on Monday and did power runs for both V3 and V4 of the S2 Everest Chip. V3 gave a peak of 204 BHP and V4 203 BHP. Power and Torque curves were similar with V4 showing a slightly smoother power delivery and an improvement of about 10 lb ft of torque at 3500 RPM. I'm at home at present so haven't yet had the chance to scan in the Dyno graphs, but will do this early next week and post. I have Elanscan logs for both power runs, and will send these to Alan along with the Dyno data, (also have CO and AFR figures for the V4 power run). The guys at the Dyno seemed quite impressed that a little 4 pot 1600 could deliver that kind of power!

As promised above here are the graphs for the Dyno session I did last week. All are for the S2 Everest chip.

First V3

Nige,
nice results. For interest I've plotted them along with the others available. Your Everest V3 results on the S2 are very similar to mine on the SE, and confirm the better power and torque curves compared with the BBR-equiped SE (Philbo) & MBC-equiped S2 (Rob's). My plot of your results is a bit approximate though as I just read them off your graph (and the scales seem a bit funny on your plots). If you IM me the actual figures I'll plot them properly.

Looks good for the Mountain chips though - ElanScanMan should be pleased.

John

edit: oh dear the picture doesn't display. Maybe there's a delay.
edit: OK that's fixed it. Thanks for uploading the pic Tony.

John,

Graphs are scans of those produced from the Dyno, no actual figures were produced so I have nothing else from the Dyno I can send you :(. I note the scanning has lost the outside edges of the graphs, but LH vertical axis is power, RH vertical axis is torque with engine speed on the horizontal axis, I think this is pretty normal for this type of graph but it isn't immediately apparent from the scanned graph)

I have sent these graphs to Alan along with the log files of the power runs for both chips, I think he should be pleased to.

Nige

[/quote]
I humbly retract what I said. :-[

I have finally got round to re-setting the engine timing and the car has been transformed into a startled cheetah with a rocket up it's arse! ;D For the first time since fitting the Goodyear F1s, the tyres have actually been worked to thier limit on acceleration. Just goes to show how important it is to get the basic settings right to bring out the best in the ESM chip.

Now, about those brakes.........

I had my Smog check here in California yesterday, with the "Everest" chip installed and also pre-cat removed (replaced with Bill Sun's pre-cat eliminator). The result were fantastic! It passed with flying colors!

I noticed that when the car is at a stop light or idling, and the temperature reaches the level where the cooling fans kick-in, the car boost is limited to about .5 bar in all gears, until it begins to cool. Is this one of the engine protections in the ECU?

-- Ed

Yes its part of the ECU.
Yes, a quick look at the code shows that the boost is limited to passive levels at coolant temperatures below 60°C and above 100°C.

Good to hear the emissions test presented no problem - I was confident it would be fine but its nice to hear of a solid pass.

Just an update on chips exhausts and MOTs.

Put my car (95 S2) through its MOT last week at the same place I have used for the last few years who have a firm but fair approach. I have an S2 Everest chip fitted (not the very latest version as it has the .96 bar fuel cut). The custom exhaust I had made and fitted earlier this year removed both pre-Cat and the main Cat.

In this configuration the car failed the emissions test and the MOT :'(.

However, my exhaust builder rebuilt my standard main cat into a section of pipe to allow an easy(ish) exchange from no Cat to Cat. Forty minutes of work later to refit the Cat the car passed the emissions test and therefore the MOT with no problem. :)

I will see if I can find time for another Dyno run to see what effect the refitting of the standard cat has on output before I decide whether to leave it fitted or to make the Cat swap an annual event.

Hope this is useful to anyone contemplating removing the cats from their S2 here in the UK. Bottom line is that the pre-cat can be removed at no risk of failure but the main cat in place appears to be essential to get through the emissions test and therefore the MOT.

Nige

Anybody here with a chip, lives near Camberley and has free time on Sat 11th Dec? For £35 you can get a rolling road session. That's good value (about half normal cost).

http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=9559

Get that base-timing set and get us some more data.

John ;D

Just want to throw something in the mix, a question for alan really but if anyone else knows....if your BSV is faulty will this affect the chip thus the cars performance??

Surely if the BSV's faulty then it won't be giving you the protection it normally affords.
When I first started test driving the chips, I hadn't appreciated the need to refit the BSV from my old FCD set-up.
This gave Alan some concern because he received spurious and alarming Elanscan logs. Alan gave me a right good telling off and explained that I could have done serious damage to the engine...

Yea but potentially could a faulty BSV determine how much boost is used?

Mikey,

you ask "if your BSV is faulty will this affect the car's performance?"
Oh yes.

The chip (any chip - even the standard one) controls the duty cycle of the BSV (variously named the Boost Solenoid Valve or Boost Control Frequency Valve) to govern the opening of the wastegate above about 0.52 bar.

If the BSV is nackered then the chip can try to control it as much as it likes, but it can't raise Lazarus.

John

"...it can't raise Lazarus"

Maybe we've missed the point here then. Perhaps we shouldn't be messing around with Everest chips.
What we need's a Viagara chip!

;D

Thanks John

mmm.... this could be good news. If my BSV is knackered i could bypass it with a MBC for a TEST!! just to see if i can get the extra boost the chip should give.....i think ???

John's quite right - if the BSV is toast then boost can't exceed the passive wastegate threshold of 0.5 bar (ish), via the chip anyway.

Someone should have a BSV that's ok...
