Since Pinky II is going on the NORLOG stand at the Wyreside Hall event, thought i`d do a little bit on the engine bay cause the heat shields went dull and the rust was coming through so i just clean them and used hi temp Aluminium colour spray. Thanks to Darren i`ve also installed the silcone hoses now the engine bay is looking sweet :D

ps i`ve installed my dump valve and now the fluttering has gone from the turbo :) cause that was doing my head in. I`ve also installed the silencer so i don`t get the woshhhhh noise from the dump but it`s done feck all

anyone up for a project

Hmmm...
I know just what you mean Dico, so I had a bit of a surf of the designer sites on the web and came up with the cheeky little number at the bottom which I think would work really really well on Pinky.

I think if he coated Pinky's header tank in sticky-back plastic Monty could be onto a winner for sure. I think this faux-stained-glass example could give him that whole new look he's been searching for.

If you don't fancy stained glass, fear not! There are many different exciting patterns to choose from here.

We could be onto something really different here. Why put boring clear plastic film on your car to protect it from stone chips when you could have some of these?

OK Doug it's a fair cop. Wife and kids away and me forced to stay in with only the dog, TV computer and booze cabinet for company.

I was feeling frivolous.

Mea culpa. Please dock me one meaningless post... oh OK two then.

It looks very nice Monty but I'm not sure about the air filter.

1) It gets hot air - bad for power
2) It might give less flow resistance but do you really think you see boost sooner as a result (see point 1)?
3) Less flow resistance generally comes at the price of letting in more wear inducing particles

I know the stock box isn't pretty but I prefer it as an induction route over open filters.

To me the whole point to the open filter is for the looks.

1) The air feed underneath the filter is still there, but i do need to reposition the air feed from underneath the wheel arch in to a direct flow of air from the front grill (some how)
2) i`ve noticed no differance in boost with the airbox on or with the open filter.
3)there`s no chance of any particles getting through the filter

Ok the pipe to the wheel arch is still there but the filter draws in air from all round its circumference so the air will still be warmer than it would otherwise.

You say no particles get through with a lot of conviction, is that based on information suppplied by the manufacturer and is the filter described as a 'high flow' item? I made my initial remarks on the basis that all filters have a particle size threshold below which some particles will make it through the matrix, high flow filters generally having a higher size threshold.

Yes i agree that there`s more warm air around the filter in the engine bay, but i`ve not felt any lost off power. There`s quite a few with open air filter ie. doug, costas. and i`ve not heard of them having any problems. Like i said i need to move the feed from under the wheel liner and maybe have to put a 2nd air feed like costas. I`m not the one to read to much in to things Alan, cause i`m not technically minded + my mind is on other things ie gearbox replacement  I`ve only had a the car since march and she`s gone through a little work. But i wouldn`t mind a Custom chip to push Pinky over the 1 bar limit

I like the way slipped that request in

I might have a slightly higher boost chip in the not too distant future but other developments (remapping the fueling and spark advance under power enrichment) need to be sorted first. Having said that I think 0.9bar is probably ringing that wee turbo's neck enough. If you really want more you might want to mess around with the wheels in the turbo. I'm going to do a custom chip for just such a setup soon.

Alan, will you tell us where to get the turbo altered, & what to ask for as well ?. Am i guessing this is a development of what Mr Vickers has done ?
JPS M100 was built from bare chassis up to create one off M100 in the mould of JPS Team Lotus

I'd refer you to Mr Vickers and I'm pretty sure he'd refer you to Turbo Dynamics

Sounds kool, keep us up to date. Dico`s has the BBR and his boost needle goes right over the 1 bar and seem`s to be able to hold the boost with no probs

The boost gauge in my red car goes over 1bar too - the boost doesn't though, the gauge is just a bit of an exhibitionist.

The fact is that the extra boost the BBR delivers puts more air into the engine but since the FCD clips the MAP reading you don't get any more fuel after 0.8bar so all that's happening after that point is the mixture gets steadily leaner as the boost rises. The stock fueling map is certainly too rich at around 10.4 a/f ratio. If the BBR hits 1.1bar (that'll be a peak at around 4500RPM it won't hold it up to redline) then a back of envelope calculation reveals the a/f ratio will be 12. Great you might say that's around the optimum value under boost - fair enough but the spark advance is set up for 10.4 so some knock is inevitable. The knock control of the ECU is then activated except because you've disabled the boost control it doesn't work - oops. If you think BBR gave any attention to the ability of the turbo to run 1.1bar you've more faith in human nature than I do.

As piece of design/engineering the BBR kit is at best a bodge - it sucks (or, more accurately, it blows  ). Once I map the timing & spark advance you'll get more power with 0.9bar than the BBR produces with 1.1.

Alan, I like where you're coming from :D . Optimising the current set up does it for me as I don't want to go down the route of modifying the internals of the Turbo (yet). As ever, if you need a guinea pig..................

Alan,

Wish i was technical as u, but do understand that the BBR kit is a botch job (ie same as FCD and bleed valve) and prefer u`r chip for saftey reasons and able to control the fuel mixture. Dico would like to go the chip way but at the mo there`s a huge difference in performance and he`s reluctant to remove it. I`ve drove a few M100 and none go as quick as Pauls on the standard turbo.

Look forward to the new chip, i`m with Nige if u need a test subject let me know.

This forum is very lucky to have u Alan (creep creep LMAO) :D

Aha,
an interesting discussion.

Monty, if you want evidence of the standard turbo running out of puff, look at how the boost declines on the right hand side of this graph for all of the curves (standard chip, Everest V3 & V4). I interpret this graph to mean that the standard turbo cannot sustain boost over 0.8 bar for very long (say ten seconds). Now that's usually quite long enough I agree, but it does point to the limitations of the turbo.

http://www.asnu59.dsl.pipex.com/elan/graphs/dyno_9mar.jpg

I've talked to others who've tried both an say that the bleed valve/mechanical solution does give better response and more kick than the chip; I just don't have any dyno data yet to demonstrate this.

Alan,
Any thoughts on modifying the boost look-up rate to update each cycle instead of every second cycle as you mentioned earlier this year? Surely that will improve response (or maybe make it more flaky, hmmm).

The map of ignition and fuel should certainly get better power and torque delivery; personally I'm more interested in the shape of the curve than the ultimate power. I'll be glad to help by getting another dyno run for comparison.

As I've just changed my insurance to a company who will insure modifications for a reasonable price, I'll be running the Everest in my car from Sunday instead of the standard chip I've had in all the time except for dyno runs (honest). 8)

Think i need to get myself a laptop and do some ES runs in Dico`s and Pinky II

Dico`s Boost kicks in very quick and jumps of the bloody gauge, could do with installing a better boost gauge.
