Can anybody tell me if I need to buy a specific set of Lotus locking wheel nuts for my 1990 SE Turbo or can I simply go to say Halfords & get a set?

Halfrauds stock McGard locking wheel nuts for the Elan (M12 x 1.5 27179 SU) and they will fleece you £29.99 for the set.

Anyone know a source here in the Colonies?

since the Elan OE uses wheel 'bolts' I doubt you will find them without a specialty shop, Jack. If you convert to wheel studs (as I and others have done for aftermarket wheels) then you can find locking wheel 'nuts' at the local auto parts place likely . . .

A long while back, Nitro had posted info regarding an ebay item that has worked for me.
TunerLugs:

I am not sure if this is the EXACT bolt kit I purchased or not, though. I have to check the cone angle. The ones that I purchased were M12, 1.5, and IIRC 30mm (a little longer than standard I think- but work fine for me).
I would check the length, angle, and thread pitch of the standard bolts against the offerings if you are interested in any of these products- as they have a lot of options. Could easily go the stud/locking wheel nut option as Doug mentioned also- as now I need to get 12 shiny wheel bolts to match my shiny locking ones!
