steering wheel...stupid question 1

I'm trying to get my wheel off........I presumed it was lever the horn push out and unbolt......am I correct or not....only Ive applied some force to the centre push and it doesnt want to come off....I just wanted to check before I continue adding more force until (knowing my luck) I break it!!
can anyone tell me how its supposed to be done?

Or just wear ear plugs.

Oh, and beware of hitting the wheel to "shock" it off. It's a collapsible steering column which is designed to do guess what if it gets hit hard. If it does shorten, you'll end up with very stiff steering and a large bill.

As for the push and twist to remove the horn button, if you're quick you hardly even need to annoy the neighbours.

Does anyone else find that the horn(s) are generally pathetic?
My wires could cope with the current when both were connected, and sort of yodelled! But with only one connected, it's more of a "parp (sorry)" than a "PARP - OI, MUPPET!"

Once you have the horn push out of the way, undo the nut a few turns but don't remove it. Then apply as much brute force by pulling on the wheel in a straight line until it moves up the shaft and connects with the nut. If you remove the nut in toto before applying force you end up wearing the steering wheel as an unwanted and very painful facial accessory - I know, I've been there.

Another option to remove the wheel (if it really won't shift off the column) is to remove the horn push as described, remove the foam ring, undo the 2 hex head bolts that secure the horn push springy bit, you have now exposed another 4 hex head bolts, undo these and the wheel just lifts away from the centre fitting. No pullers, no brute force no smacked face!

No, just a smarta**e . The fun was in fitting a leather rimmed SE wheel to replace the stock plastic rimmed NA wheel. Oh and the fact that even less than subtle application of a large mallet to the plastic wheel wouldn't budge it from the column.

That`s a mod i am trying to do. The n/a steering wheel is horrible in plastic, seems secondhand SE wheels go for about £100. What i really want is momo boss kit! The column must be similar to some Vauxhall surely ????

Just replaced my steering wheel, 2 days ago.

The guys at DSP used a mechanical device similar with ones you use to open Wine bottles (if that can be said) and if my memory works fine its called ejector or extractor, but it needs very precise execution because there is fear to push the steering column inside, and then it needs lots of work to get it back at position and even more to cause period damage and would need replacement. After that normally you need an adaptor to install the steering wheel. I bought the MOMO one which according to the MOMO manuals was fit for Lotus Elan as similar to Opel ones. Then realized that the back side of it (not the one that the steering wheel gets screwed at) was different at the point that goes in and locks. U could always use the stock adaptor (I did) and just use a cover around it.

Costas, i like your wheel. That`s what i`m aiming at having. I did wonder if the column splines must be compatible with a GM / Opel boss kit. I think you have just confirmed it for me. Cheers

Also check for an Isuzu / Geo adapter (what I have) if the others are hard to find. Rumor had it that the Isuzu adapter is no longer out there, but you never know...good to have options. The overexposure on the pic makes the wheel look like Costas' brushed aluminum, but it is black. It is Momo's "Racing Line" wheel.

Dave I thnk we have the same steering wheel, but I dont like the extra cover ring that it has so I didnt put it and also I replaced the momo logo and instead installed a Black Lotus logo.

Stupid Question 2

Do I need a Momo-to-Nardi adapter to fit an S2 wheel to an SE?
It looks as though a small collar would do the trick, but sod's law usually dictates that you have to buy the whole thing. Anyone else out there done this?

I hope not...I bought a nardi wheel and not fitted it yet....
I presumed it was a direct swap!!!!......dont recall and odd bosses or anything else thats why I thought it was straight swap.....If you find out any different please keep me posted as I'll need to work out what to do!!!

I'm sure you need a boss for the nardi S2 steering wheel, have check the parts manual and the S2 is different to the SE.

doh....dont understand why theyd have done that and I hope youre wrong but hey ho.....I'll wait and see......
Ive had a quick look though the parts list and kint find any reference to a steering wheel........I'll keep looking though
