'A' Post Seals - Availability of

Postby Pilot2 » Thu 26.01.2006, 14:10

Does anyone have, or know where I can get, a set of 'A' Post seals for my 1991 Elan Turbo?

Local Lotus dealer keeps saying they will come next delivery (2 months on now!) and SJ Sportscars say they have several on back order and have no idea how long it will be before Lotus find another supplier.

If there aren't any out there anwhere, does anyone have any ideas for a temporary fix while I wait for the real thing?

Can the car be used without them, say with the windows down all the time?

Thanks

Paul

re the temporary fix
mine were a bit past it too but I used the black goo from halfords to reseal them........at halfords its now a loctite product..40ml tube....£4 a go
called loctite superflex black (think they did a clear one too!!)
halfords cat number 24802
this works like normal sealant and is very good stuff....and its also easy to get off if you make a mess of it
hope this helps

I get the impression that P2 has no seals to repair though, mate.

Having won the battle with my insurers to have the A post seals replaced with my screen I too am now waiting for seals to arrive. I was told that Lotus expect to have stock available the first week in Feb (info from Westover Sports Cars, Main dealership/Service Centre in Poole).

Spoke to Gerald at GST Performance today about these. He contacted lotus & rang me to say they were out of stock, & they were looking at getting some more made, but there were no fixed dates !

Thanks for the responses from everyone, especially the link to the other thread (I did look first - honest).

Karl is correct I don't have any old seals to try and repair.

To explain. I am currently rebuilding my Elan after an accident which sheared the windscreen 'A' Post. The old seals were wrecked when removing them from the old screen surround. The newly fitted 'A' Posts didn't have any seals with them (from another crashed car!). I wasn't too worried because I thought I could buy some more with some of the insurance money! Now I'm worried.

I'll keep in touch with my local Lotus Dealer and SJ Sportcars to see if Lotus deliver any soon.

Thanks again.

Just as a matter of interest, when speaking to Gerald at GST, he said when they fit a new screen, they don't have to touch the A piller seals. The problem is when your Autoglass etc peeps do it they get paid £40 a screen, so its all rush & hurry to try & make a few bob, whereas lotus book-time to replace a screen properly is 7hrs !. Some insurance company's won't pay this, so its worthwhile checking when your insurance is due again ?

My information is that lotus are having a M100 in during April, at which time they will be having a seal supplier / suppliers in to quote on producing new seals, but when we will actually see any, is anyones guess ?

Thanks for the info from both of you. Please post as soon as anyone hears that they are actually available. I will keep chasing my local Lotus Dealer.

Not sure if this helps but I had no problem getting new ones when I had my windscreen done under the insurance. They got them from Chris Foulds 01484 666 552 - that was in September though.

Thanks RatHead. I tried Chris Foulds but he hasn't got any left.

Latest news. I've placed an order with SJ Sportcars who believes they will by available at end of April. Ordering now, and paying a deposit, secures the purchase at today's price. Still very very expensive  , but hedging against a large increase. They are not going to be cheaper in the future are they :!:
