stiff gearbox

hey there,
Being a new elan owner and not being motor mechanically minded really. The basics i can cover, i have recently encountered a problem and was wondering if someone can offer some guidence. My gearbox has gone rather stiff when in nuetral and therefore resulting in it stopping when trying to engage 3rd from 2nd and 4th from 5th. I was thinking that my gearbox oil might be running low but im not sure. does anyone have any guidence, everything will be most appreciated!!

Gav, my gearlever went really stiff & it was the selecter arm on top of the gearbox had loads of road crud, where the cables connect. I just sprayed loads of WD40 at it & kept wiggling the lever & it freed off. When it was in for service they cleaned it properly. Its not easy to get an aerosol can in there, so one with one of them extension tubes is better. Hope this helps ?

gearbox oil is a consideration--you can check with the records to see if and when I was last changed--a change would not be harmful--there's a write-up on the site for instructions; but it can be hard on your nerves to do--but not too difficult overall

but it could also be gear change cables out-of-adjustment and/or a failing gear cable -- this is a common Elan fault
