A West Midlands Sunday drive in May?

Postby a5gcd » Sun 02.04.2006, 17:15

Does anyone fancy a drive along the byways of Worcestershire and Herefordshire into Mid Wales, stopping somewhere for lunch and then back. Bring the wife or girlfriend (but not both).

There are some quiet, twisty B roads between Worcester and the Welsh border.

If so I would be happy to plan a route of say 150miles round trip. Let me know if you are interested and what would be your preferred dates.

To start the ball rolling mine would be 21st or 28th May, in between the 2 Shelsley Walsh meetings.

Excellent idea Geoff.
How far would you need to extend the route to take in the Elan Valley?

Sy
I was thinking about Route_1 of the attached but it could easily be Route_2 taking in the "Elan" valley. A run of about 175 miles round trip from Worcester with a stop in Newtown for a carvery lunch and Rhayader for afternoon tea.

Nice idea; 21st would suit me best. Not too bothered about visiting Elan valley, but will go along with whatever route you prefer.

I MAY (joke, 'MAY' get it !!!! ha ha ha  ) be up for this, but can we start it a bit further up like Halesowen/Bromsgrove and returning via Worcester if required.

Or you could all follow me to Edinbough tomorrow and then back via York on Thursday,

NO,

Thought not ;-)

There is no reason why we could not start from Hagley as it would be fairly central and then return via some good B roads around Shelsley Walsh to Worcester, if everyone agreed.

No surprise that I would agree with a meet in Hagley, but that means you coming all the way over just to go back again.

Why don't we make the start & finish the car park of The Hundred House pub at Great Witley, which is on both of your suggested routes, easy to find and a convenient run across for me, Sy and Rob.

Is the 21st OK with everyone?

It's not ideal as it's the w/e before Castle Combe, but it should be OK.

Sy

Yes, I had forgotten Castle Combe on the 27th. The 21st it is then, OK??

The Hundred House is also OK by me, I can amend the run so as not to drive the same roads twice. It is also a good pub for an end of run pint or 2.

Hi, As there are no other comments are we GO for the 21st May from the Hundred House at Great Witley???

If you will just nod yes, I will go ahead and plan the route and stops in detail.

I am sure Niall will also come if he is free, he is back from holiday on 20th, I will ask him then.

Sorry Dave

If you want to come you will have to take my wife, I'm taking the girlfriend.

Let me know so that I can put it in her diary.

Geoff

Edit: Just been told to say that they are both the same person, oops. :smt021

West Mids Sunday drive in May

Postby niall » Wed 19.04.2006, 22:21

Yes Geoff,
I'm back and I'm on for this little outing.(come to think of it, if it is all girl-friends and wives, there will be no outing ).
In the unlikely event that the weather is inclement, I reserve the right to go sailing instead.

Niall
Glad to have you "on Board"

If the weather is bad can we all come sailing, I expect the boat is more water proof than the Elan.

For those of you coming on the run

The Hundred House is at Great Witley.

I have made a trial run of the route and have found a superb hotel for lunch. They do a carvery, 2 course @£11 or 3 course @ £14. A table is booked for 10 people at 12:30. There is a coffee shop by the reservoir in Elan village for an afternoon stop. Both places offer good oportunities for photos.

We will need to leave Great Witley at 10:30 to arrive in time for lunch. If you could arrive earlier coffee will be available in the hotel while you check out the route, I will be there from about 09:45.

Talking to some friends about the drive I have had 2 requests from non Elan drivers who would like to come along, an Esprit and a BMW. If there is no objection I will invite them.

The route is 146 miles round trip.

Rob could you confirm that you are coming.
