Are you sure it is a good idea to use Stainless hardware for a turbo? I don't think I would personally; I only use Grade 10 hardened. Or are these some special variety?

be sure to incorporate some small length of flexi-pipe after the downpipe area to keep the engine and stiffy movement from causing failure of welds on the stiffy or other parts of the exhaust!!

Anyone else agree with the 'mystery man' ?
I know some other chap did it on here, just figured it would be ok. Even the original studs (granted they were 14 years old) snapped when i removed them. (well most of them)

Yeah, cheers Doug. I was hoping i could wait until the Elan fund rises a little as its curently at minus  Bit risky to wait though? Lets see if Peco man comes up with an iresistable offer? Shant hold my breath :D

Paul, might be worth looking into ( stainless steel bolts ), i know they normally don't have the strength that ordinary steel does, but they do make extra strong s/s bolts now, but they come at a premium. Unless youv'e got the strong ones, i would be very cautious about them, don't want them to snap when engines back in, that would be a real pain !

To be honest with you mate, i wouldn't worry about s/s bolts on your turbo, can't really see them anyway. I would just get some new studs from lotus agent. Now, you can wait 2 wks from SJ's or ring you know who ?

The only reason i fitted them were-
1) they dont rust, making for easier removal ? :? )
2) they were all i had in the garage :D
Wasnt really bothered about the cosmetic side of things. Monty seems to think lotus dont have them listed? I havent looked myself. Might nip to kwikfit if i can find a salvageable sample stud.

Thanks for the comments chaps.

Found the part numbers for

- Nut, wastegate manifold to turbo = A100E6439S

- Stud 30mm wategate manifold to turbo = A100E6436S

I thought i would order 2 sets for myself (1 spare) and one for Monty.

Total bill = £49.30 +vat + postage.
Well, thats a bargain if ever i've seen one :-D :-D

I wasnt going to confirm the price with the girl at Southwest lotus as i felt a little embarassed for such small items, luckily she told me

"they're special Lotus nuts" she told me after having a word with the mechanic.
Should bloody hope so at £3.05 + vat each!

Like i said, i'll be having a trip to kwikfit :D

ARP SS studs & bolts have a tensile strength of 180,000psi, about 15% stronger than grade 8 steel. They do cost a premium over common A2 stainless fasteners though.

I will use them in any position which can be seen while doing my "ground-up" exhaust & turbo upgrade/rebuild. Not only are they pretty but hand-polishing is the cheapest part of their purchase! They'll both look great and come off like butter in 5-years with no maintenance inbetween.

BTW I think my next car will be the 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP... just not a new one! 260HP & 260lb/ft of torque @ only 2500-RPM, wow! Perhaps in 5-years they'll be at a good price point & with plenty of aftermarket goodies available. Heck, the Lotus will probably be worth more than one of them by then to boot!

By "special nuts" (I'll avoid the possibilities) she is correct in that they are a fine thread, 10mm by a pitch of 1, I believe. I have it written down back at the house and I found a place online that stocks them in stainless.

Can anyone confirm that the tensioner should be backed off once the cambelt has been turned two revolutions?
I dont think it should but would just like it confirmed.
I know on other vehicles were the spring is self tensioning.

Cheers :)

p.s. managed to mate the gearbox up to the engine tonight, not much progress but getting there.
Who was it that said label up ALL nuts and bolts :?

Sorry Dico, it was me. I guess "Guest" posting is enabled now? Anyway, I keep posting without realizing I am no longer logged in...

Yeah, I checked into it a few back when I was installing my turbo for the same reasons you mentioned. I found that they were relatively weak and was advised not to use them. Expansion rates are very close to cast iron, but the strength isn't up to the task.

Also, when they do twist off, you will have a miserable time trying to drill them back out. They tend to gall up; it isn't pleasant.

But as Nitroman pointed out, I have heard of specialty fasteners that are supposed to be very strong, that is why I was asking if these were something special or just hardware-store variety. I have never used them, but imagine they would be great for this app? :smt102

Nitro..... A Pontiac?? - how could you? Of course, the Mallett variety might be understandable....but again, I say MIGHT.... :D
