Rear window repair

Postby Hinch » Thu 20.04.2006, 12:51

Does anyone know of a way to repair a rear window? There is a two inch split at the top where window joins roof fabric? Is there any glue or other process which would weld the two edges together. (or am I just being overly optimistic)

Can't say I've heard of any techniques for this type of repair. What is the rest of the window like? Is it worth trying to replace the window, but this probably involves hood removal :?

The rest of the window is in good shape I would say. I know that you can buy the stuff it is made from, cut it to size and sew it in, but it must be one hell of a job. SOme where there must be a solution to this without having to replace windows damaged like this. Some kind of clear silicone sealant would do it if it was adhesive enough and strong enough.

Try Araldite. It doesn't set clear, more translucent, but it'll stick anything. Hope it helps.

Would it be worth getting in touch with Trim Technology to see what they recommend? I'm sure a search should throw up their contact details. Or perhaps a member would be kind enough to post them.

I think clemo :poke:
has sewn a rear window in - rest hood between a couple of chairs - push needle through - go underneath - push needle back - repeat until complete. Ruddy hard work, though.

Might be worth contacting a local trim shop instead ...

I think that having to put in a new window for a fairly minor slit should be unnecessary in this day and age with so many adhesives and the like. Im sure lots of people have this problem with their windows and it would be great to find some way to successfully repair rather than replace. I will try the trim shops and post details of my success or failures

Rear Window repair

Postby bruce9263 » Thu 04.05.2006, 20:02

You could try a yacht sailmaker. I had a winsurfer sail with a clear window that got torn. They managed to weld a clear patch in that did a good job. They might even be able to put in a whole new window. I expect you will need to remove the hood. Go to a yacht chandler to find one.
