Gear Linkage Snapped, what to do?

Postby GPT27 » Fri 14.04.2006, 20:51

Accelerated hard in first, changed to second, couldn't find a gear, finally found third then fifth but once I stopped it was game over.

AA man said the linkage cable had snapped which is what I suspected. He got me into second and I drove it home (about 2 miles luckily).

I know this is a common failure on Elans but I can't find much about it in the forum, if anyone has any links or info for me I'd really appreciate it especially on:

1. What parts I need.

2. How much are the parts?

3. How hard is it to fit. (especially, could I do it myself with no ramps etc and only a scoket set and some screw drivers).

I would really appreciate any info you guys have. I guess bank holiday weekends are not good times to break down garage wise so if any one knows the location of a write-up on how to swap in a new one that would be great.

Thanks in advance for your help.

GPT,
this has been mentioned a lot as you say (most recently by Stef or JimP). If you can't find what you want by the search function, look here:
http://www.lotuselancentral.com/lec/shifter.htm

Basically you have three main options:
- buy a new Lotus set of cables
- buy an improved set of cables from either Alan Betts (http://www.abmotosport.com/Elan_products.html) or WillB who acts as agent in UK.
- repair them using Dimitri's neat solution in the reference above.

Depends how much cash you have and how badly bust they are.

Thanks Jon,

Not sure if you've got the cables sorted now GPT? If not I have a set available
